I recently bought a Winchester 1897 takedown, at some point in its past the what I was told original 28inch barrel was cut down to 24 1/2 inches. Since this gun was already cut I wanted to convert it into a trench gun. And also have someone that knows what they are doing see if they can help make it cycle smoother. Does anyone know of a good gunsmith that would be able to help me with this ..read more

How do I remove cerakote?

My friend has a Contender 256 Win Mag pistol bbl with ammo, brass, reloading dies, forming die, bullet mold, gas checks, bullet sizing die, top punch, jacketed and cast bullets at an attractive price. I’ve fired it and it was accurate. However the bbl has an ugly to me snake skin pattern on it. Solvents don’t seem to touch the coating, and the coating is not perfect anyway. How does one remove the cerakote to end up with a simple stainless steel bbl? Thank you. PS He has no other... Read more ..read more

Had a guy bring in a Re. 700 Mag , said it had a ejection problem. Frist thing I removed the bolt, Looked at the bolt. He told me he had someone look at it and work on it. They grind on the bolt face where the ext. was held in . being an older bolt it had a rev. holding the ext.in and it needed replacing . A 50 dollar job is now a 300.plus job new bolt .does cover checking HS I don't a 300 wm head sp .gauge Just my 5 cents ..read more

I've been investing in some specialty tools lately and I'd like to pick up a trigger scale next. My LGS has a fillet knife/fish scale combo for $20 (and I recently broke my 30 year old knife), looks an awful lot like the wheeler manual one. And I see this one all over ebay; https://www.ebay.com/itm/2251866799...MgVjFRR0K&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPYi I'm only a hobby gunsmith, mostly for myself... Read more ..read more

How much would you charge?

I'm really interested to know what folks think a gunsmith's time/labor is worth. Imagine that you are the gunsmith and a customer came into your shop and asked you to make a scope/battery cap, how much would you charge to make it? It has .7 metric threads at 36 tpi. You have to regrind your cutting tool 3 times into 3 different shapes to accomplish the operation ..read more

I was left a couple of old Remington Model 11's from my grandfather, in need of some attention. Found BearKat through ONESHOT, in Milton. Barry took great care in bringing back this family heirloom, from a time gone by. He takes his time to understand the manufacturing and history of products he works on. 832-231-5952 ..read more

I have a Winchester 94 30-30 I was cleaning and I cant get the front ring that holds the tube and barrel together to hold, I think I stripped the screw. Does anyone near Jay do gunsmithing like that? I also need it safety checked, it's the in-laws who just lost the dad I can't return it to them like this. If you I need it done ASAP. Thank you ..read more
