1911/2011 Barrel Fitting Process - General Steps

Over the years I have fitted both Bushing and Bull Style barrels in mostly 2011 guns and some 1911's. Most of them being Para/Clark style barrels. Listed below are the General Steps I take during the Barrel fitting process. I also want to mention that I do all of this using hand tools so the average DIY person can knock it out without needing a mill or lathe. I predominately use a Brownells Slide/Frame Rail File for most of the filing needed. Beyond that its Dremel work using various Stone, Flapper Sanding wheel, and Polishing bits. Your Dremel Kung-Fu skills need to be strong if you don't wan ..read more

2011 barrel fitting

I have a famous brand custom 2011 that needs a new barrel fitted. I asked the origional builder but they only build new guns and do not do any gun smithing, even on customers guns. I emailed several other builders and they don’t respond. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good gunsmith in the Phoenix, AZ area? I tried a  gunsmith in the area to replace a thumb safety on the same pistol and that guy screwed it up and had to file it myself to get it to engage fully without 30 pounds of pressure. Im at a loss why I cant seem to find anyone with talent to do the job ..read more

???s for those that regularly replace/upgrade 2011 style COMPETITION triggers

Wondering if there are "benefits" to using an aftermarket trigger where the bow uses front and rear "shoes/extensions" to align it with the bow track in a 2011 grip?   I have noticed a few that only have the shoes/extensions (for a better word description) on the rear; which in my understanding would require the bottom of the trigger shoe to be the bearing surface for maintaining correct horizontal travel "evenly" in the grip along with maintaining perpendicularity of the bow as it travels back an forth in the grip track.   On the other hand I have premium trigger assemblies by Atlas ..read more

Firing pins

I recently had problems with my 2 STI type open guns in 9mm major. The firing pins indentations in the primers were quite deep and during a competition I had an accidental discharge with my finger outside the trigger guard. Upon checking various primers I saw that the tip of the extended firing pins in both guns were flat with sharp edges. Some of the primers (WW SPP) had holes on the sides of the primer indentations. The firing pin had extensive powder marks along its length. I reground the firing pin tips to a normal curved shape. This shows just another area to check in the never ending jou ..read more

as the title says I'm hoping to find a member who is capable of performing barrel reaming for my Czechmate to 1.650 OAL for major loads.   I reached out to patriot defense as a recent search led me there. but they stated they require a dummy load, and I do not own a reloading tool to facilitate that request.   If someone could point me in the direction of a competent smith with the ability to ream the barrels for me i would greatly appreciate it.     ..read more

Is there a Better Quality, Brighter replacement fiberoptic rod or are they all the same?

I just noticed during my annual safe cleaning sessions that one of my 1911 pistols is missing it's fiberoptic front sight rod. I can't recall which brand/make/model of front sight it is.   I've got to figure out what diameter rod it houses and I was wondering whether all replacement fiberoptic rods are of the same quality or are there perhaps preferred makers?   I would very much appreciate your help and guidance. Building a Para double stack 9mm - minor mistake - Can I DIY Smith my way out.

It started innocently enough. The old Para P12-45 sitting in my safe was getting NO use. I'd always wanted to build it up as a 9mm. So I started that process. Ordered a commander slide, tracked down all the top end parts, got a match barrel, fit that match barrel, shot gun. All went well. Some file work and lots of measuring, but it went well.   Bright idea, I saw a Para P14 frame (full size) on Gunbroker. I jumped on it. Only to discover it is unramped. My top end (as is currently) wont work. So I am left with a few options and need advice - Long term goal is a range gun that i can run s ..read more
