Savage mo. 1904 headspace

I picked up this early model 1904 to refinish for my son when I discovered that the head space was too long for the striker to detonate the .22 rim. The most straight forward approach I can think of is to add material some how to the "receiver" behind the lug of the bolt handle, but I'm unsure of the best way to do that. I have a welder, but am unsure about metal finish and temper once I add metal and file it down. Have considered soldering a piece of shim stock, but would that peel away... Read more ..read more

So I got this scope for my Marlin model 60 22 LR and it's great accept the eye relief needs to be about 2" and to get that comfortably the scope needs to come back 3". I have been researching adapters but I haven't really found anything yet. Do y'all know of anything available off the shelf or does anyone think they could make me an adapter ..read more

Set back and rechamber question

I may have outsmarted myself but I bet someone out there has tried this. The 22-250 I built last year was my 3rd rifle barrel to fit, so I am still on the steep end of the learning curve. It has turned out to be a really fun rifle and I ahve spent a LOT of time tuning loads, getting to half MOA with a couple. BUT, I am starting to see significant lengthening of the loads to still touch the lands...throat erosion. It is on a Rem 788 action, so a separate recoil lug design. Reading all... Firing pin steel selection

I am working on restoring a particularly trashed FIE E15 revolver and one of the parts that I can't buy is the firing pin. I don't have a lathe but I made a functional replacement using a drill press and file out of 12L14 steel as a test. Now I feel confident I can make the part so I want to get a better steel for the purpose. I ordered some 1144 rod from McMasters and I was wondering if it would be a good choice or is there something better available. I am extremely limited in heat treating... Read more ..read more

I have an older 700 BDL that I have never been able to keep in a diner plate pattern at a hundred yards. Things that I have checked: 1 barrel and chamber are clean and look good. 2 scope and mounts look solid and aren’t moving. 3 trigger is a jewel and seams crisp. 4 have tried several brand and hand loads to no avail. What do I check next? I purchased the gun used in 1972 and have never been able to keep a pattern under 10 inches at a hundred yards. It should be under two inches at a... Read more ..read more

Breach plug Sealing Tool

A McSavage 45 that I built about 5 years ago came back with a problem. The bolt wouldn't close on a fresh primer. It turned out the smokeless muzzle loader was used for some all day pouring rain hunts and the shoulder that the breach plus seals against had rusted, spacing out the plug further towards the bolt preventing it from closing. I took the barrel off and spent an hour and a half dialing in the breach plug bore just to make a .002 cut that lasted 5 seconds. The rust was now gone but... Read more ..read more
