Introducing Oracle Barbie! Celebrating 10 Years!

It was ten years ago today that I mustered up the courage to press “Post” on the very first blog I’d written for Hyperion Barbie. It has been an incredible decade of learning, connecting, networking. While Oracle announced its plan to acquire Hyperion Solutions in 2007, my journey started a few years later in 2010 – starting into a new hire role at Hallmark Cards and I was mailed a hard copy of the Essbase 6 administrator guide. I learned the ins-and-outs of a mature EPM deployment and earned experience in administration, development, and most importantly, how to serve our user base. Moving in ..read more

EDM 23.12 New Feature Spotlight: CurrentProperty Object

Hey there! Today’s post is a quick overview of the new CurrentProperty object that Oracle released in the 23.12 EDM patch! This function allows for the expression builder on a derived property to reach into the property parameters of itself! Currently, in an expression you can use the CurrentProperty function to retrieve the property Name and Description to use in your derivation. This feature could be helpful if you need to derive a string field that comes from the configuration (maybe you need to include a description of the property or the property name in the load to a data warehouse/data ..read more

Hi there – welcome to the first of (hopefully) several blog posts regarding the feature-packed 23.09 update of Oracle Enterprise Data Management! This feature is one of my favorites from this patch, and one we have been asking for, for what feels like years. This release includes the Configurable Validation Severity for Custom Validations. Let’s walk through the feature and why it’s important. Configuring a Custom Validation’s Severity In this example, I’m going to add a custom validation on my PBCS_Account dimension. This is a simple example – any time I add a new Account I will be ensuring t ..read more

Oracle EPM Support Update: RIP Blue Skies and other Themes

Today, I have a very sad update to this post I wrote in September of 2020 on the different color/theme options available in EPM. In early 2024, Oracle will only support Redwood Theme in Oracle EPM Cloud, for all business processes. You can read more about it in this article. It includes: Planning, Consolidation & Close, Tax, FreeForm, Profitability, Account Reconciliation, Narrative Reporting, and EDM. In fact, once the switch occurs, Oracle will not even entertain any SR’s on Non-Redwood themed EPM applications. If you are using any of the Non-Redwood themes, it’s best to start switching ..read more

While I am still recovering from the amazing week at ODTUG #KScope23, one of the many new features I am most excited about is the new Pipeline feature in Oracle EPM Data Integration! The Pipeline feature was released in 23.06 into Data Integration (aka new Data Management) for the following modules: Planning & budgeting/Planning modules/Freeform (PBCS/EPBCS) Consolidation and Close Tax Reporting Profitability and Cost Management (EPCM) – I think this is only available in the Enterprise version, not the old version of PCM Support for Pipeline in Account Reconciliations should be out in th ..read more

Oracle EPM Cloud: Data Integration Replacing Data Management – what you need to know!

In the 23.03 update notes, under “EPM Cloud Common” Oracle snuck in a little update that is the first steps in formally decommissioning Data Management. The news, which can be read here, states that starting in the July 2023 (23.07) update of Oracle EPM Cloud, some configuration items available in Data Management will be essentially ‘turned off’ and only available in the Data Integration module, found in the Data Exchange task. The 4 configuration features are in the table below: So what does this mean? Essentially, all of these activities are configuration setup items, or activities that wou ..read more

Oracle EDM: Using Reference Dimensions
HyperionBarbie

Reference Dimensions is a feature introduced in the 22.09 release that allows you to load in data from external sources to be used for.. you guessed it… reference for other data. Common examples would be assigning employee names as owners of a department, or tagging a location code on a cost center. The best part, is this Reference Dimension data does not count towards your EDM record-based licensing if you set it up correctly. There are a few criteria to keep in mind: This does not allow you to manage the data in EDM – meaning you aren’t authoring this data, properties, or relationships and ..read more

I’m happy to discuss with you a game-changing feature for Oracle cloud clients with EDM & Cloud Financials GL: End-to-End Integration! This feature allows for the Chart of Account data managed within EDM to be exported and imported with a single configuration. Apologies for a September feature review in November It’s been a very busy fall! What makes this a game-changer? Let’s Review “The Old Way” Prior to this feature, we’d have to configure a number of steps to orchestrate this end-to-end process. For purposes of this post, we’re going to call this “The Old Way” of configuring this inte ..read more

22.09 New Feature Spotlight: FreeForm Adapter

One of the 18 new features released in 22.09 is the addition of a new Application adapter, FreeForm. Today I’m going to show you how EDM can be configured to manage master data for FreeForm applications and how this adapter differs from other Application adapters available in EDM. What is Freeform? FreeForm has the same basic constructs as any of the other Oracle EPM cloud applications that are based on OLAP technology (Consolidation, Planning, Planning Modules, etc.) in that you build dimensions and can load data, add calculations, and report. However, unlike these other applications, you can ..read more
