Alex Smith, the former Utah quarterback who led the Utes to a perfect season and Fiesta Bowl win and went on to become the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, announced his NFL retirement on Monday. The 16-year NFL career had it all, as the former No. 1 Draft pick was nearly forced to retire from football years ago after suffering a gruesome leg injury. The wait is over. The University of Utah has announced the hiring of Craig Smith. The Former Utah State head coach takes over for Larry Krystkowiak who was fired after a 10-year tenure. Smith compiled a record of 74-24 at Utah State and has a career record of 225-108 (.676) in 10 years as a collegiate head coach. He led the Aggies to the 2021 NCAA tournament as the Mountain West’s second-place finisher with a 20-9 record, posting a 20-win season for the third year in a row. On Tuesday, Utah announced that it was parting ways with men’s basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak after his 10th year on the job. The Utes finished 12-13 (8-11 Pac-12) this season and last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. Krystkowiak’s departure comes just days after the Utes fell in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament to USC, 91-85.
