Watering the money trees

Time to celebrate our recently announced water rate increases. Break out the best gray water champagne! Andrew Barbano Commentary I tried to obtain information from the Nevada Public Utilities Commission about the 2001 sale of the local water system by NVEnergy’s predecessor, Sierra Pacific Power. I received everything but what I asked for. When I pushed to get the price us peons paid, I was refused the info and referred to the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. I’ve been waiting for weeks for a response from TMWA, so I guess I’ll just go with the flow. On March 19, I sent this to TMWA’s PR depa ..read more

Sparks Tribune

By Eric Neugeboren The Nevada Independent Nevada lawmakers last week assigned around $39 million in repurposed American Rescue Plan (ARP) money to various projects, putting about half of that money into mental health efforts a month after Gov. Joe Lombardo said the state should prioritize spending in that area. State legislators approved $14.5 million in ARP funds to renovate a shuttered mental health facility in Washoe County that local officials say will be a lifeline to youth in need of mental health care. Lawmakers also voted to provide $3 million to a Carson City company to relocate its s ..read more

State board to launch survey on high school start times
Sparks Tribune

The Nevada Independent The State Board of Education is preparing to launch a survey gathering feedback on later high school start times, but is no longer planning to pursue a regulation that would have allowed for the concept to be put into practice. It’s the latest setback for an idea that, while supported by doctors and implemented in neighboring California, has failed to get off the ground in Nevada despite multiple attempts in the last decade. Last year, the board faced backlash from superintendents over draft regulation language that would have required public high schools that begin prio ..read more

Glitches in new simplified financial aid application creates headaches at Nevada colleges
Sparks Tribune

By Rocio Hernandez and Carly Sauvageau The Nevada Independent Geoffrey Green, the manager of financial aid and scholarships at UNR, sits at a table outside the university’s student union on a chilly April morning, ready to talk with students for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Week of Action. It hasn’t all been rosy this time around. An attempt to make it easier for students to apply for federal financial aid to attend college has led to a series of issues that has delayed Nevada colleges’ ability to get that assistance out to students and a 43 percent drop in the state’s year ..read more

Lessons from breakfast
Sparks Tribune

There’s a breakfast joint near me that serves a solid breakfast, quickly and with good cheer. It’s nothing fancy, but it has the full range of items – eggs, hash browns, pancakes, etc, – and what it does it does very well. Sherman R. Frederick Properly Subversive Last time I was there, last Saturday in fact, my breakfast joint was packed. Our party of four got the very last table in the joint. Yet, we had water and coffee within 60 seconds of sitting down. After ordering, it took precisely 5 minutes and four seconds for our food to arrive. I know this because I used the stopwatch on my iPhone ..read more

So stated Tina Turner in the 1985 blockbuster “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.” Andrew Barbano Commentary That line best summed up my overwhelmed feelings last Friday evening when the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council inducted the late Tribune journalist and my old friend Dennis Myers into the César Chávez Nevada Labor Hall of Fame. Using a hockey analogy, Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar noted that the occasion completed a hat trick for Dennis. He had previously been so honored by both the Barbwire and Nevada Press Association rogues galleries. Living up to my self-imposed nickname of ..read more
