Not this year, fellas
This weekend, the Republican Party of Virginia is holding their convention to select candidates for this fall’s statewide elections! Or, actually, they’re holding 37 conventions! Or, they’re not exactly conventions! Wait, what?
Let’s roll this back and talk about what conventions are, and then what the GOP is actually doing this year.
How a Normal Convention Works
In a normal year, if a state party wants to hold a convention they literally gather delegates together in the same room. Who are the delegates? Party insiders, donors, but mostly faithful volunteers - the folks ..read more

The story of state government over the past few decades is modernization. State officials are doing more, and doing it more efficiently and professionally than ever before. Of course, state government is not perfect; there are still many ways that state politics seems stuck in the 19th century (cough Cuomo cough). But at least in terms of policy capacity, the arrow is trending upwards.
Here in Virginia, though, there is at least one vestige of small-time state governance: the office of the Lieutenant Governor. Like, dude, what is that even FOR?
The Lieutenant Governor or LG is modeled on the ..read more

You’ve probably been hearing a lot about problems at Virginia’s Parole Board. There is a lot there that maybe I will go into elsewhere. But you may have some more basic questions, like: what’s a parole board? And what was it SUPPOSED to be doing?
If you are lucky enough to not be embroiled in the criminal justice system, you probably know about parole mostly from TV and movies. (“Rehabilitated? You know, I don’t have any idea what that means.”) But the Parole Board is more than a fiction, and has real and important effects on people’s lives.
So again, what is Virginia’s Parole Board all about ..read more

The Virginia General Assembly (GA) ended their session last week. Are they really done for the year?
The GA is in many ways a mini-version of our national legislature. Like the United States Congress, the GA is bicameral, with a larger House and smaller Senate; does most of its work through committees; and has a bunch of obscure rules with obscure names like “third reading” and “engrossment.” (Ew.)
But there is one big difference: U.S. Senators and Representatives have a full-time job, and pass laws throughout the year. VA Senators and Delegates are part-tim ..read more

Vaportecture at its finest
There were two big developments (as in, literal developments) in greater Richmond yesterday. The city of Richmond launched a survey related to a possible resort casino; and nearby Henrico County is taking on their version of the Navy Hill arena project.
First, the casino: the city’s survey is pretty much hot garbage. It’s not a survey so much as a cheerleading instrument, with a list of benefits masquerading as a series of questions. A respondent only really gets to rank benefits, with no questions about costs or asking of any concerns. The survey essentially asks ..read more
