From the article: Some of the coyote management reforms that are needed to protect wolves include: The coyote hunting season should be reformed. Currently, it’s a 6-month season with 24 hour a day hunting, with no daily or seasonal bag limits. Hunters can kill as many coyotes as they please. As part of the coyote season reform, all wild canids taken in the state should be checked and tagged. Wild canids that are taken that have a weight greater than 50 pounds or that meet additional criteria established by the Department should be subjected to a DNA analysis. Tests that show a large canid is ..read more

Lack of small game.

So living full time at my hunting property I get to hit the woods so much more. What is so disappointing is the lack of small game. I just spent 3 hrs shed hunting with the dogs. We did not see 1 critter. I can remember flushing 2-3 grouse and seeing a bunny or two. Is it a bad cycle they are in or too many predators? My pups in a field!  ..read more

Easy Predator Bait Station

An easy way to set up a predator bait station is with an old tire, just lay the tire on it's side and put the bait or attractant inside the tire. It is reasonably well protected from weather and the animals have to work at getting the bait out and keeps the birds from getting at it. Set up in the right place with the right bait can really draw them in. I would set these up targeting Coon, I did not shoot over them although one could if they wanted to. I did it for training my young dogs so I could go to the tire and would have relatively fresh tracks for them to run. I would use cheap dog food ..read more

Coyote Predation.

This study backs up what many coyote hunters know. A South Carolina study found that coyote predation accounted for between 46 and 84 percent of all deer mortality in the study area, and somewhere between 47 and 62 percent of all fawns succumbed to coyote predation, most within the first three weeks of life. Researchers also determined that most fawns were killed by different coyotes, meaning this behavior was pervasive rather than a few individuals that had learned to specialize in killing fawns. While the researchers didn’t go so far as to say coyotes represent a threat for deer across the S ..read more

Pheasant Hunting questions

A friend has invited me on a pheasant hunt in NY. I've hunted deer and coyote in the past, but never any birds. It's on a private preserve.  Three main questions: 1. My 12 gauge is a SxS. Is that appropriate for pheasant, or do I need something that holds more than two rounds? 2. How much ammo should I plan to bring for a day in the field? 3. Do I need a NYS hunting license (this is the first year I didn't get one)? I seem to think so, but also thought there was some exception for private preserves. Thanks in advance. Any other tips would be appreciated ..read more

A real good video from hunters up in Nova Scotia hunting Hare with Beagles, I don't know what time of their season these hunts took place but the Hare did not seem to have a real white changeover yet to their fur. Makes me want to go out and get me a good Beagle. Al     ..read more

Hare Hunt on fresh snow

Headed to the  northern tier  for some Hare chasing with my one beagle last Friday/Saturday. 5 hour drive took longer since the light snow was sticking on the interstate. Arrived to 4  inches fresh snow on top of 10 inches or so crunchy old snow. 3/4 mile walk in on unplowed road was invigorating. Entering the forest I spied hare tracks and meandered for an hour checking blowdown pines . As I was ready to move to a different spot gunner opens with a few barks and I know it's showtimshowtime. The hare loops out 140+ yds and the barks are faint but steady .I watch my Garmin and see ..read more

Well 2023 Marks the start of my 50th year of Pheasant  Hunting. Today,I took Sweet ABBEY  up to the great Habitat of Indian Hill in Sterling  Forest State Park.   She got on several  scents amid the Indian Heads- but these veteran  holdover Pheasants  would  rather Run then Fly.   Time Flies! My only regret is growing up in a area that had Zero Wild Turkeys and 2023 Marks only my 34th year of going for the Bigger Birds.  Below,I snapped a nice pic of ABBEY this morning.  ..read more

I am looking forward to trying out a new Icotec Varmint call, I would like to carry it with a shoulder strap but after looking it over there is no simple way of attaching one. So I was just about to buy some sort of a carrying bag and remember I had a shoulder bag stashed in my closet that I received for a gift years ago. Got it out and it looks like a perfect solution. Plenty of room for the caller and remote plus a bunch of extra pockets for a knife, compass, gambrel, GPS, ammo etc. I believe it will work great. With little snow on the ground should make for some easy walking I hope to get o ..read more
