The women’s Beanpot Tournament is getting an upgrade. For the first time, the consolation and championship games will be held at TD Garden on Jan. 23. Harvard will host the opening round at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Tuesday. The decision to move the tournament to an NHL stage doesn't just represent a new setting, but a shift in the trajectory of women’s hockey and respect around the game. Harvard women’s hockey is at a crossroads. After 27 seasons, the era of coach Katey Stone (Watertown, Conn.) ended in June with a retirement announcement blanketed in controversy on the heels of reports by The Boston Globe and The Athletic that brought forth allegations of misconduct and mistreatment of players within the program. Seven New Englanders will be competing this week as USA Hockey holds the Women's O18 National Festival at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.  With the O18 players, the goal is to evaluate players for the 2023-24 U.S. Women’s National Team, which competes at the Rivalry Series in November and December.  It also is used to help pick the Collegiate Women’s Select Team rosters for the Collegiate Series against Canada. University of Wisconsin women’s associate head coach Dan Koch helped recruit freshman defender Caroline Harvey, first seeing her play at a summer tournament when she was in eighth grade. He said everyone could see early on in preseason practice that the Salem, N.H., native was a special player just watching her skating ability, but he said her breakout moment came in the team’s eighth game of the season against St. Cloud State. The 2022-23 college hockey season was a cool one for New England.  The Division 1 men's national champion was Quinnipiac, marking the first time the program won a title. Boston University, which won the Hockey East Tournament championship, was also in the Frozen Four. On the Division 1 women's side, Northeastern reached the Frozen Four.  There were surprise teams, too, such as Merrimack, which landed a spot in the men's NCAA Tournament.
