There are many reasons why breastfeeding in winter is beneficial for both mom and baby, but breastfeeding during the cold winter months, especially with so many germs going around, presents even more unique challenges. With germs and viruses going around, breastfeeding is not only nurturing, but it also provides some protection for baby’s immune system as we can pass antibodies through breast milk. Initially, colostrum is ideal for newborn babies as it is high in antibodies and other components that begin to protect baby from pathogens. What is even more amazing is that if baby has picked up ..read more

When Should I See a Pelvic Therapist After Birth?
Pinnacle Women's Therapeutics Blog
by Buffy Stinchfield
1y ago
As we see women during their pregnancies, we are often asked “when should I come back to see you”? This is a great question because we strongly recommend that EVERY postpartum woman see a pelvic therapist following every birth. While this will depend on a lot of factors for the new mom, we can see her as early as 2-3 weeks after her delivery regardless of vaginal vs c-section delivery. While this has not always been the recommendation in the larger medical world or discussed among mothers, the tide is changing and more experts in postpartum health are coming on board with the assertion that a ..read more

If Lots Of Kegels Won’t Fix Sneeze Pee, Then What Will?
Pinnacle Women's Therapeutics Blog
by Buffy Stinchfield

By: Buffy Stinchfield So very often in our office, I see women who tell me they diligently are doing their kegels to resolve their sneeze pee issues, without success.  Or, I am starting to see an increasing number of women who have actually heard that kegels alone aren’t the answer, but they don’t know what to do instead. So what’s a gal to do?  (This is the part where your pelvic PT is enthusiastically raising her hand like Hermione in potions class because she KNOWS the answer!) What EVERY woman needs FIRST to solve this issue is a thorough evaluation by a skilled pelvic PT.  ..read more

What Do We Put In a First Period Box For Our Daughters?
Pinnacle Women's Therapeutics Blog
by Buffy Stinchfield

As a women’s health physical therapist, I found it actually quite fun to prepare a pre-first-period gift box for my oldest daughter.  We have had many good conversations about the changes she and her friends are going through as tweens and it only felt right to make getting her prepared for her first period more fun and exciting instead of something to dread. I researched online for products I would include in this box and came up with what felt right for her.  A combination of practical and some fun things.  It’s been over 2 years since I made this for her and we even recorded ..read more

When it comes to the later part of pregnancy, our pregnant belly is quite obviously larger and placing extra stress on many parts of our body.  This can include our low back, sciatic nerve, round ligament pain, and much more.  Many clients that come to us for prenatal care are unaware that there are multiple options that can make their last weeks MUCH more comfortable.  Especially while we are on our feet. In this blog, I will review the two main categories of support and the pros and cons of each. Back and Belly Brace The first support solution is the maternity back and belly ..read more

Can I Heal My Prolapse?
Pinnacle Women's Therapeutics Blog
by Buffy Stinchfield

I’ve been asked by many women and patients over the years what they can do about their prolapse.  Will it or can it get better?  What will make the discomfort go away?  They are often scared and also feel let down by their medical providers and society at large for NOT discussing the possibility of POP. They are often told by their providers that things are not that bad and come back when it IS.  Despite the fact that they are coming to their doctor to discuss their bothersome symptoms of feeling like things are falling out of their pelvis or feeling pain and pressure with ..read more

Seeing a Pelvic PT Postpartum Is The New Standard of Care
Pinnacle Women's Therapeutics Blog

Women who have given birth should NOT be made to feel that being seen by a pelvic PT postpartum is extra.  EVER. Even when your birth provider has said that you are all clear to go back to exercise, sex, and all activities at 6 weeks you should STILL be getting checked by a pelvic floor physical therapist… ESPECIALLY when you are noticing issues with peeing, pooping or intimacy. Feeling GOOD in your body postpartum is NOT a luxury… it is a NECESSITY to be the amazing mother you want to be and THRIVE in this journey.  We are way past the days where women joked about potty issues like ..read more

Strong Glutes For Pelvic Health and More

When it comes to pelvic and core health, many people assume that all we need to focus on is the pelvic floor and core muscles.  But that would be a mistake.  The most important muscles that stabilize the pelvis itself are the glutes.  We definitely need them to be on their game for optimal pelvic health. Although many people think that they are just fine in this category, I actually find it to be the rare patient that is not in need of some glute retraining or strength work.  And surprisingly, many people have glutes that are actually pretty asleep on the job and cannot ev ..read more

By: Buffy Stinchfield At least 1 in 3 women experience stress urinary incontinence at some point in their life.  It can be leaking with a cough, sneeze, or jumping on a trampoline. Anything that creates a sudden increase in pressure to the core muscle team.  And although the first thing to be blamed is pelvic floor weakness, it could actually be something quite different.  Timing. Let’s break down what the pelvic floor and core muscles are getting wrong, how they are SUPPOSED to work, and how you can start fixing this issue. What’s going WRONG? When a person coughs or jumps and ..read more

Magnesium Revisited

By: Buffy Stinchfield When it comes to supplements, it may be difficult to decide what is important to take.  While we can get a lot of our nutrients through the foods we eat, some nutrients are just not as readily available from our food these days due to reduced soil health from over farming and we may just not eat those particular foods.  One very important nutrient that pretty much most of us can benefit from taking is magnesium.  I blogged about this a year ago and how much it helped me on my journey, but have a few updates to add to this for you. As research goes, there i ..read more
