It’s safe to say Miles McBride played a pivotal role in the New York Knicks’ Game 1 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the NBA playoffs — even drawing chants from the crowd at Madison Square Garden. (Mary Altaffer/AP) Final score: Knicks 111, visiting 76ers 1-04 on Saturday. While Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart led the way with 22 points each, McBride’s performance was particularly noteworthy, scoring 21 points and just generally making a big impact off the bench. McBride’s strong second quarter, during which he outscored the 76ers by himself, helped the Knicks build moment ..read more

Anthony Edwards, Timberwolves Capitalize On ‘Desperate’ Feeling
Hoops Wire
by Sam Amico

Not many people are giving the Minnesota Timberwolves a chance in the NBA playoffs. Or even to get out of the first round. (Abbie Parr/AP) But the Timberwolves showed plenty capable on Saturday, racing past the visiting Phoenix Suns by a 120-95 count behind 33 points from Anthony Edwards. They lead the Western Conference series, 1-0. “We just wanted to show we were the desperate team,” Edwards told reporters. The Suns, interestingly enough, won all three regular-season meetings. They looked overmatched on this day, though. Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 points, Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 18 o ..read more

Random dribbles following the Cavaliers’ 97-83 home win over the Orlando Magic in Game 1 of their first-round NBA playoff series on Saturday. … (Nick Cammett/AP) 1. That is how you’re supposed to look in the playoffs. Experience, toughness, hustle plays, and belief. The Cavs came out with a great deal of energy and never trailed. 2. As ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said at halftime, Orlando looked “overmatched.” The Magic can thank (or blame) the Cavs for that. Cleveland just looked like the superior team in nearly every facet. 3. Yes, the Magic made a few runs. Yes, the Cavs had some moments of fru ..read more

Hawks Need Do-Over, But That Doesn’t Mean Trading Trae Young, Dejounte Murray
Hoops Wire

Something needs to change with the Atlanta Hawks. They’re one NBA club that’s indicated they already know that. But things can continue as is. Three years after making it to the Eastern Conference finals, the Hawks aren’t even in the playoffs. They changed coaches (Nate McMillan to Quin Snyder). They changed front offices (now Landry Fields). They added Dejounte Murray to Trae Young and traded John Collins to the Utah Jazz. Yet another season was spent spinning their wheels, pro basketball’s version of running on a treadmill. Now there are rumors they may be open to dealing Young, with the Los ..read more

ESPN Mics Go Out For Start Of Cavs-Magic Playoff Game
Hoops Wire

What a way to begin the NBA playoffs. For the first two minutes of the Cleveland Cavaliers-Orlando Magic game, we saw a couple of 3-pointers for the Cavs and a basket by the Magic. We just didn’t hear about them. That’s because the mics for the ESPN broadcast went out right at opening tip. Eventually, analyst Doris Burke returned, by herself, and was forced to handle play-by-play duties. But it was 8-2 in favor of the Cavs before we even heard from her. Burke apologized for the network, citing technical difficulties.  “We had some technical difficulties and now with our monitors, I just g ..read more

NBA icon Scottie Pippen revealed in his book that he and Michael Jordan have never been close friends.  VINCENT LAFORET/AFP via Getty Images Pippen and Jordan won six NBA championships together on the Chicago Bulls. However, according to Pippen, he and Jordan “have led two very different lives.” “Michael and I aren’t close and never have been,” Pippen wrote. “Whenever I call or text him, he usually gets back to me in a timely fashion, but I don’t check in just to see how he’s doing. Nor does he do the same. Many people might find that hard to believe given how smoothly we connected on the ..read more

No one really knows if All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell will sign a contract extension with the Cavaliers this NBA offseason. Michael Reaves/Getty Images But there sure are a lot of hot takes and opinions about it. “That (Mitchell situation) is very real,” one league source told Sam Amick and Josh Robbins of The Athletic. “Teams will definitely clear out a bunch of (assets) for him. We’ll see. But if they face Boston in the second round, they’ll probably lose. And yeah, that doesn’t bode well (for his future in Cleveland).” Now, keep in mind that other sources have told Hoops Wire the playoffs ..read more
