Weyes Blood, the project of singer-songwriter Natalie Mering, performed the second of 2 sold out homecoming shows at Union Transfer (aka, the spaghetti church) in Philly on Wednesday, March 1st. The Doylestown, PA-raised artist is currently on her In Holy Flux Tour supporting her latest LP And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow, released late last year (a follow-up to her 2019 breakout album Titanic Rising). Preceding her run of dates supporting Kacey Musgraves in 2019, we were lucky enough to catch her at Johnny Brenda’s on her last headlining tour – c ..read more

Iowa City-based (by way of North Jersey) indie singer-songwriter and bassist Pictoria Vark (aka Victoria Park) performed at MilkBoy Philly on Saturday, February 28th, along with local openers Cold Soul. Vark released her debut LP The Parts I Dread (on Get Better Records) last spring and I’ve been looking forward to catching her live ever since. The Parts I Dread opener “Twin” is sparse in arrangement (with bass harmonics reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius’ “Portrait of Tracy”) but rich in storytelling that carries through on shreddier tracks like “Wyoming”, “I Can’t Bike”, and “Out”. Her Midwest lo ..read more

NYC-based, Quarters of Change delivered an atmosphere like no other at The Foundry in Philly. The alternative band that got started in high school back in 2017 has gained well-deserved attention over the years. Following them for a while, there was nothing better than getting the chance to experience their live performance!
The band took the stage dressed in the coolest outfits, radiating talent and a contagious energy. Ben Acker and Jasper Harris shredded guitar, Attila Anrather carried the beat on drums, and Ben Roter nailed each note on vocals. From beginn ..read more

Screaming Females still remains one of my favorite bands. Anytime they release a new album, I go into Screamales mode – this not only has me playing their new album over and over again, but I go through their amazing catalog on repeat. February is always a great month because it’s when they put on their Annual Garden Party at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. For the 2023 edition, it was 2 nights – I was there on night 2 and it featured GEL, Catbite, and Laura Stevenson.

Singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson played two sold out shows at the Sellersville Theater this week, touring his 2022 release, Boston Accent. Opening for Nathanson both nights was fellow Massachusetts native, Stephen Kellogg. The historic theater was packed in tight with a crowd made up of Matt Nathanson die-hards, Theater members, and even a couple children to whom Matt graciously gifted a couple of his guitar picks.
Having attended various Matt Nathanson shows over the past 20 years, it was no less evident on Tuesday night how much the folk-rocker truly still ..read more

Fresh off the release of her excellent sophomore LP Honey, Nashville-via-NYC singer-songwriter Samia played a show at Union Transfer in Philly on Wednesday, February 8th along with opener Tommy Lefroy. Known for her intimate lyrics and powerful vocals (on tracks like “Is There Something in the Movies?” from her 2020 debut LP The Baby), she’s earned a place among our most beloved indie pop contemporaries – so much so that her absence on Taylor Swift’s upcoming The Eras Tour seems like an oversight. On Honey, she delve ..read more

Angel Olsen played White Eagle Hall in Jersey City on Monday, February 6th. Touring in support of her outstanding 2022 album Big Time, I was so excited to hear that she’d be making a stop at one of my favorite venues. Her powerful voice accompanied by The Big Time Band was all anyone could need on a Monday night. Olsen’s banter with the audience also made for a great show. The crowd yelled out things like “Jersey Girls love you” as Olsen told everyone she jus ..read more

Multitalented British singer and songwriter Suki Waterhouse brought her Coolest Place In The World Tour to Philly on Friday, January 27th with a sold out show at Union Transfer. Waterhouse released her critically acclaimed debut LP I Can’t Let Go (via Sub Pop Records) last year and followed that up with her excellent Milk Teeth EP which features 5 songs from early in her career plus the previously unreleased track “Neon Signs”. She also recently released a stripped down version of “Good Looking“, Waterhouse’s viral song originally released in 2017.
