En Plein Air Painting

Twenty-five plus years ago when I was taking courses at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, I was introduced to plein air painting.  The art of painting landscapes outside, on site.  This is how Monet and the Impressionists made their landscape paintings.  I restarted the practice at the beginning of the pandemic, and have slowly been doing it more and more.  Over the past year and a half I have built a canvas holder that attaches to a photography tripod, put together a plein air painting kit that easily fits into a back pack, and gotten my set up to where it is easy to ..read more

A New Year

2020 was a year that I am sure we are all happy to have behind us.  After a very productive year of painting, it ended with a bit of a lull.  The whole house had COVID-19 in the beginning of December, and the holidays, even without the ability to visit like normal, was still super busy feeling.  Now that the new year has begun, the paints and brushes are back out, and the painting has started. To begin the year, I built a new plein air easel.  This attaches to a camera tripod.  I have made two small easel attachments for working on little paintings, and have larger par ..read more

We took a very short trip up to Branson, MO a few weeks ago in an effort to get some fresh air after so many weeks of quarantine.  It was a lovely trip, even if social distancing and wearing masks made it more difficult than a normal vacation.  Either way, it was good to get out, and I have been inspired by the trip, and completed six paintings related to it.  Two were plein air paintings, one finished on site, the other started on site, but finished at home.  The other four have been done from photo references from the trip.  All paintings are available for purchase ..read more

Adventures in Monoprinting

I know the world is a little (a lot) messed up these days.  We are all under some form of quarantine.  There are thousands, if not millions, of people protesting for social change.  One of the ways I look for sanity in these times is by making art.  Lately, I have been working with monoprints.  They let me be very free and spontaneous, and escape, if only briefly from the world around me.  Please take a look at my recent work below, and take a break from the craziness that surrounds us all. Sailing Under Spinnaker, 6" x 6" image on 8" x 10" paper   What ..read more

Saturday night in Houston we had an opening showing my work at Serenity Studios.  Donna was a wonderful host, and is running a really great space.  Donna's mission to support artists in the community is really a wonderful one.  If you are in Houston, you should check out Serenity Studios.  Donna and her daughter Drew did a wonderful job of hanging my paintings.  Originally we had planned the opening to be a one night only event, but Donna asked me if I would be willing to leave the work up longer, so if you were not able to see it on Saturday night, it will be up for a ..read more

Exciting news.  I am having a showing of my recent paintings at Serenity Studios in Houston, TX. (1331 Yale St., Houston, TX 77008)  We will have a reception Saturday, February 15th at 6:30pm.  My work consists of landscapes and nature paintings that explore the joy and love we experience in the world around us. I have spent most of my life sailing, and my paintings help share the love I have for the sport and my time on the water with friends. I also have paintings from other outdoor experiences, which include landscapes from vacations with family, and local Louisiana wildlife ..read more

My Painting Process - Dixie Chick and Defiance, One the Run

Buy This Painting I thought I would share the stages of my newest painting as it was being made. I start with a basic drawing, and then I block in the basic colors.  Once the basic colors are blocked in, I work on refining the drawing and the colors. From there I start adding details, and bring the whole painting along a little at a time. I don't generally finish one part too much before any other. It probably isn't visible in this picture, but this is when I realized the spinnaker on Dixie Chick was too long, and I have pencil marks refining the shape of the spinnaker. After some mor ..read more

I mention in 'About the Artist' that I grew up surrounded by family art, and it is so true.  As a very young child, it was art I saw in father's house, or when I went to visit my grandmother.  After she passed away, I inherited some of it.  I have lived with a couple of very special paintings since I was a teenager, and they have influenced me in ways that can't be quantified, but I am sure the influence can be seen in my paintings.  (The way I initial my paintings is a direct nod to Grandpapa Hutson initialing his.)  As I have grown older, I have been given or inher ..read more
