Any advice for running Windows 7 with no Microsoft support ?

I use Windows 10 but I want to create a Windows 7 virtual machine using Hyper V Manager for running older games that are not Win10 compatible or don't work well on Win10, I have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate I want to use. I've never run an OS that for which support has been discontinued so I imagine that there are security risks in doing so. I have Bitdefender Total and Malwarebytes Premium that I use together on Windows 10, would that be enough to keep me safe on Win7? Are there other things I should do to keep safe? Also I've never used Windows 7 before so if anyone has tips for setting it ..read more

Cannot install Win7 - Drive is GPT partition error

I have an older 4TB drive I installed into an older PC running win10 22H2. I want to install win7 on this drive but the installer won't allow it. It says the drive has a GPT partition. I thought win7 could handle gpt. I ran disc format thinking that might work but no go, Joe. Do I need to break the 4TB into 4 or more smaller partitions? And before anyone asks, I have some programs what will only run under win7 because mictosoft's sycophants crippled newer versions so they won't run under 7. And, no I NEVER had any security problems with win7, not did I have weekly fixes to security problems in ..read more

Win 7 updates - some failed, many (?) missing

Greetings; I pulled out my old desktop that hasn't been used in 8+ years. It's a Win 7 home premium 64 bit system w/ service pack 1 installed. Before I put it in storage - I (tried) to install all the updates available as of 11/2015. I now see that many of those updates failed. And I haven't gotten updates after that date. 1) I'm assuming I need to find and re-install those updates that failed - is the downloaded file saved on the hard drive somewhere, that I can 're-run'? - or do i need to re-download/install? 2) I found the Microsoft Update Catalog - this could take HOURS - to find, downl ..read more

File Naming in Windows 7 ?

Hi - I have recently run into a problem on my Win 7 machine where I have made some filenames too long. And now in Windows Explorer I can't do anything with them. I now have two files (mp4 files) like this and probably more as well that I haven't discovered. I can't play them or select the text and there is no option in the dropdown box to rename the file. I also can't move it to another location in the drive where there would be no extra file name length added such as with folders. Win Exe box tells me the filename is too long. They now seem to be dead. I get a dialog box come up when I try t ..read more

Hello! So I have a i7-6700k with a Z170XP-SLI motherboard, these components fully support windows 7, so decided to install Windows 7 on my M.2 NVMe SSD. I was successfully able to install Windows 7 using rufus (GPT and UEFI) on a usb and also using the msi smart tool to insert necessary drivers for the install, mother board settings during install are, other OS, CSM off. Now for some reason Windows 7 wont boot up, it gets stuck on the Starting Windows logo then goes into Windows error recovery, anybody knows what's going on ..read more

When I tried to use the chkdsk /r /f cmd command to check one of my Hd's on Windows 7 it started to use my ram at an alarming 1% per second, after 1.5 minutes the command was using 90% so I cancelled it. On Google I found out that this is a Windows 7 bug that was fixed on Windows 8 and beyond. What can I do to check my disk without this massive use of ram ..read more
