Sixers Notebook: Knicks fans get under Joel Embiid’s skin in a New York minute

PHILADELPHIA — The day began with a laugh, Sixers public address announcer Matt Cord appealing humorously to the primal instincts of Philly and New York fans jamming the Wells Fargo Center for Game 4 of the first-round playoff series between the Sixers and Knicks. The building rocked with booing when Cord opined that there was one thing fans from both cities could agree on, then introduced Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys. Touche. It was all downhill there for the Sixers as the hefty contingent of Knicks nearly took over the Center at critical stages of the game, which infuriated Joel Embii ..read more

Princeton women’s basketball star Kaitlyn Chen has her new home picked out for her final season of eligibility. The former Ivy League Player of the Year announced she’ll join Geno Auriemma’s Connecticut as a graduate season next season. The Ivy League does not allow graduate students to participate in varsity athletics, so Chen, like men’s players Matt Allocco and Zach Martini, had to look elsewhere for her what’s known as the Covid year. A native of San Marino, Calif., Chen was a two-time First Team All-Ivy selection and the conference’s Player of the Year in 2023. She averaged 15.8 points on ..read more

By Frank Bruzek For 50 years, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974 has provided a safety net that protects older Americans’ pensions from corporate and financial predators. Such protections would have been a lifeline for my family in the early 1960s, when the Philadelphia-based leatherworks company where both my mother and father worked for over 20 years closed without warning. The closure eliminated my parents’ pay and promised pension benefits with zero recourse. I will never forget the look on my father’s face all those years ago, the day he came home and told me and ..read more

Giants got a big-play threat in Nabers. Now Jones needs to be ready for the season

EAST RUTHERFORD — The Giants got a much-needed big-play wide receiver when they grabbed Malik Nabers early in the NFL draft, and now they have to hope quarterback Daniel Jones and his surgically repaired ACL are ready to deliver the ball when the season opens in September. The Giants really didn’t have much of a choice. They had the sixth pick overall, and the consensus was there were three can’t-miss quarterbacks and three elite receivers at the top of the board. Any of those players would have helped the Giants’ anemic offense, which finished 31st in passing yards, 30th in scoring and 29th o ..read more

FLORHAM PARK — Jaylen Key knows what comes with his new nickname. And the former Alabama safety is fully embracing being this year’s “Mr. Irrelevant.” The New York Jets selected Key with the final pick of the NFL draft Saturday — No. 257 overall — to complete the three-day, seven-round event. “It means everything, that’s part of the title,” Key said during a video call with reporters. “You just have to take it and lean into it. So for me, I’m definitely going to lean into it, every bit of it.” It’s the second time the Jets had the final pick in the draft, and first since they took Du ..read more

Suárez (5-0) allowed just three hits and struck out eight with no walks to win his fifth straight start. Suárez threw 96 pitches. Jeff Hoffman struck out the side in the ..read more
