Guitarist Stephen Egerton is the virtuoso buzz behind the Descendents fast, frantic, upbeat punk rock that has helped redefine the genre, as well as help create pop-punk. The legendary act is currently on tour with fellow old-school classic acts the Circle Jerks, and the Adolescents, and the band has shown no signs of switching to decaf anytime soon. “The music industry on the recording side has changed so dramatically, and really it is still in flux,” Egerton said before a show at Houston’s House of Blues. “There’s still a strong interest in live music, and in our case, we enjoy the experienc ..read more

Alkaline Trio still knows how to keep things lively, which has been part of the band’s DNA from day 1 by being able to apply darker tones and themes to upbeat pop-punk and emo. While touring off the success and critical acclaim of their latest release, the trio’s first headlining tour in five years saw a renewed energy from the band’s latest incarnation of Matt Skiba, Dan Andriano, and Atom Willard. Alkaline Trio is touring in support of its tenth proper studio album “Blood, Hair and Eyeballs,”, which is an album laced with gloom and doom imagery and a reflection of where society is at in 2024 ..read more

Matt Pryor, the beloved frontman and emo icon of acts like The Get Up Kids and the New Amsterdams, has penned a memoir chronicling his beginnings in Kanas to the Get Up Kids growth spurt to emo giants in his debut memoir “Red Letter Days.” Pryor’s songwriting charm is reflected in his approach as an author. The storytelling narrative he chooses to tell his life story is against the grain from your typical memoir “Red Letter Days” at times almost feels like you are reading a coming-of-age fiction novel. There’s some honest and raw reflection about growing up and fitting in: “Our actual enemy t ..read more

Sometimes you can return to tour roots while also making the future now, and that is what blink-182’s “One More Time…” feels like. This is an album blink fans have been waiting for - rooted in their pop-punk DNA, but a collective cohesive direction to progression. “Anthem Part 3” is aptly titled and a perfect opener, as it’s a fast punk song straight out of the 1990s with moments that are uplifting, and anthemic.  It’s fitting that the video for “Dance With Me” is  Ramones tribute since the chorus is very Ramones-inspired, and the opening riff sounds like a young Tom DeLonge trying t ..read more

As fall season, and Halloween approaches, it is time to take a look back at the devilishly delightful “The Show Must Go Off!: Alkaline Trio Live Halloween At The Metro DVD.” Chicago’s Metro was hallowed ground to many punk bands, and on Halloween eve in 2002, Alkaline Trio filmed this show for Kung Fu Records live DVD series “The Show Must Go Off!” Set in front of a backdrop of a large, upside down lit up crucifix and dressed like gothic priests complete with face makeup, Alkaline Trio appropriately opened with “Hell Yes” to set the eerie tone right off the bat. Hot take : “Monsters of California” is a form of disclosure.  Well, if you are with the notion that the truths of our universe have been slowly dripped through pop culture and Hollywood, then you are still with me. OK, it’s not real disclosure, but if you are a fan of Tom DeLonge’s UAP research/ accomplishments, his views on the phenomenon, and his “Sekret Machines” series, his directorial debut is sprinkled with potential truths and secrets from all of the aforementioned DeLonge dabblings. Call it a nod to those who have been listening or “soft disclosure,” but Monsters really is full of ..read more
