On 31 March 2023, we’re hosting a webinar about ICWs, and the potential of these wetlands to mitigate nutrients. You can attend for free – register via the link below. Register Now The Problem with Nutrients Ditchwater isn’t really dull – it’s actually packed full of nutrients, picked up as rain washes over the land and gushes into roadside channels and field drains. These nutrients can create stinking algal blooms further downstream, as the water reaches streams and rivers.  Algal growth blocks out sunlight, choking aquatic plants, and the decomposition of this algae causes bacteria ..read more

Wetland Creation in the Somerset Levels

A Different Kind of River In a natural river system, we can reduce flooding by slowing the flow of water from source to sea. But in the Somerset Levels, the landscape is not ‘natural’. Here, the land, much like the Dutch Polders, has been artificially drained. Slowing the flow of water by ‘rewiggling’ rivers or using natural flood management techniques (like blocking watercourses with fallen trees) will cause more, rather than less flooding here. In the Levels, when high rainfall occurs, the aim is not to slow the flow of water, but to remove it from the land, down the drains into the ocean ..read more

How Does Woodland Respond to Climate Change? We often hear people asking about the tree species which will be resilient in the future, as our climate changes. Many of our most common trees are in fact found across Europe and even other continents, so they will survive more extreme environmental conditions – drought, heat and flooding. But how will they respond to a change in the concentration of carbon dioxide? This is a question answered by futuristic structures that wrap around huge Oak trees in a beautiful British forest. The answer not only informs our understand of existing woodland, bu ..read more

Rewilding Explained – Trophic Cascades & Landscapes of Fear
Ecosulis Blog
by Chris Dagorne

We’ve been advocating for the science of rewilding since 2016, but sometimes the concepts leave people feeling a bit confused. In this article, we explain the meaning of two common rewilding terms – ‘trophic cascades’ and ‘landscapes of fear’. What are 'Landscapes of Fear'? In the life of a herbivore, fear is ever-present and their bodies have become shaped to respond to it. You might know that their side-mounted eyes allow them to monitor the surrounding environment for predators, but this predation pressure not only shapes their bodies, but the landscapes they live in, too. ‘Landscapes ..read more
