In August 2023, the international governing body for modern pentathlon, UIPM, and the international governing body for obstacle sports, FISO, entered into an MOU outlining the key terms under which FISO could be integrated into UIPM. Since then, we have been advised that only one national federation will be recognised in each country for both UIPM sports and obstacle sports after integration at the international level occurs. The 2024 Australian Tetrathlon & Laser Run Championships wrapped up in Geelong on Sunday 14 April, with some superb performances across the age groups.
Technically an U17 athlete but competing in the senior division, 14 year old Mitchell Pointon (VIC) showed a clear pair of heels to win the Laser Run championship in 11:35, a personal best and the fastest time posted in Australia to date by any male athlete in the new 5x600m format.

This Award was established in memory of John Pennell OAM, a former MPA president whose contribution to modern pentathlon in Australia spanned decades, generations and every level of the sport, from grassroots to the Olympics. Modern Pentathlon Australia (MPA) is taking Expressions of Interest for the 2024 Athlete Development Training Camp. The camp is likely to be held at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
The following will be provided:
All meals
Training sessions for Laser Run, Swimming, Fencing & Obstacle
Supplementary training sessions (TBC – may include, but not limited to recovery, strength & conditioning, mental performance)
Educational workshops
Accommodation (athletes 15 years & older only)

Bath, United Kingdom, 24 August 2023 – Kitty Chiller AM OLY, the Modern Pentathlon Oceania Confederation President, UIPM Executive Board Member and previous Australian Modern Pentathlon President has been inducted into the UIPM Hall of Fame. This prestigious induction occurred during a presentation and formal dinner in Bath, United Kingdom during the World Modern Pentathlon Championships.

Australian athletes have posted some impressive individual performances on the first day of the World Laser Run Championships in Bath, England, with the mens and relay events still to come.
Australia’s senior women, Aleska van Heekeren, Gaia Urbano and Genevieve Janse van Rensburg performed strongly in the team event taking the silver medal.
Coffs Harbour athlete, van Heekeren, finished 12th in the Senior final with a time of 13:06, closely followed by fellow Coffs athlete Urbano, who finished 18th in 14:53.

MPA has selected Rhys Lanskey and Tim Oliver to compete in the African/Oceania Continental Championships in Cairo on 29 August – 2 September, alongside Tully Watt, Genevieve Janse van Rensburg and Zara Temesi. All five athletes are vying for a place at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
Rhys and Tim recently returned from Switzerland, where they contested the Swiss Open in Bern, placing 5th and 12th respectively.

The 2023 Modern Pentathlon Australian Championships saw 37 athletes from all across Australia battle it out for podium positions in what has been an epic weekend of outstanding performances in Melbourne . The new format of back to back fast paced competition on day two at Caulfield Grammar School, saw the Fencing Bonus Round, Swim and Laser Run take place in less than two hours.
