When our club pentathletes go to the OTC for camps or competitions they will often see our Olympic hopefuls like Nathan Schrimsher and Margaux Isaksen training or competing. The ‘esprit de corps’ is evident in this wonderful community of athletes even though there is stiff competition amongst them. The training is grueling as these athlete attest. Even Genadijus Sokolovas, or Dr G as our Kids call him, talks about ‘that grind’. Click on this link to go to the ESPN Story ..read more

Several club members had the opportunity to go to beautiful Rancho Mirage, CA to a Pentahlon Training Camp and Regional Competition, and National Qualifier for Youth and Juniors. The campers trained in swimming, running, shooting, fencing and horseriding. The culmination of the rigorous week of horse riding and jumping training from Micheal Cintas, an Olympic trainer, was a horseriding competition where all riders jumped fences from 18" to 3' high. This was incorporated onto the regional pentathlon competition but was one of the most challenging parts for these first time jumpers. One of the h ..read more

There is a growing body of research showing that sports like Fencing, i.e. those that requires fast decisions, places high demands on visual attention and requires fast reactions, are good for young and old brains. In an article from the Washington Post "Is Fencing the Answer to Brain Health?" they talk about various studies in this area showing improvement of certain cognitive functions, such as attention and processing, that naturally decline with aging for people who participate in for example, the sport of fencing. Fencing, like basketball, hockey, football and table tennis are "open motor ..read more

Congrats Seamus for getting the Sporstman Award out of 150 athletes at the Youth World Championships! It was a special feat and show of strength and persistence that Naomi and Seamus went to the Youth World Championships. Seamus even managed to get into the finals. We always knew Seamus was a good sportsman and great athlete, the Judges at the Championships agreed! Seamus is a member of our affiliate club in Durango, and trains mostly with Jennifer Thurston, he embodies what we strive for at the Cheyenne club; for students to become better athletes, citizens, and people. A day in the life of our own club members can be exhausting on competition day: Starting at 7:30am to warm up for fencing. Fencing 16 different fencers in two 50 second bouts, having a short break before having a 20 minute warm up before the 200 metre swim. Then lunch, hopefully not too much as the combined run, shoot starts around 1pm. For some, after that is the equestrain event of jumping 8 meter high fences. Ask any of these athletics and they would tell you they love it. Just take a look.... https://youtu.be/OXyyHMGHpdQ ..read more

What do you do when you’re the third child in a family full of competitive athletes and you want to make your mark? Jonas Scudamore’s father was a college athlete and a national champion in the marathon. His older brother runs for Columbia University and was nationally ranked coming out of high school. His older sister ran varsity cross-country in high school. Jonas, now a freshman at East High School, also loves running and swimming and is darned good at both… but he wanted a new challenge, a unique challenge, something no one else in his family did. The answer came in the form of pentathlon ..read more

Reprinted with permission from Academy of Fencing Masters - It’s not uncommon for parents to think that their child has “aged out” of competitive fencing. Many parents think that if they’re child hasn’t started fencing when they’re very young, that they’ve somehow missed the boat for being major competitors in the arena of fencing. Many parents think that a child who is 14 or 15, or even 10 or 11 has already gotten to be too old to have a chance at international competition. So, what is the right age to start fencing? Before we go on, we want to be clear – your child is not too old to start c ..read more
