The sunset of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) is swiftly approaching. In the absence of action by Congress the TCJA is set to expire on December 31, 2025.  There are numerous considerations for families engaged in charitable giving to be aware of as we prepare for a reversion in the Tax Code to pre-2017 “levels.”   Two areas of immediate impact will be the lowering of the ceiling for charitable contribution deductions, as well as the significant reduction in the lifetime estate and gift tax exemption. The TCJA raised the ceiling for charitable contribution deductions from ..read more

Yanelie’s Story For the Ramirez’s, Catholic Charities’ Education Navigation program is a family affair Yanelie Ramirez (20) and her twin sister Nayeli, graduated from North Central Texas College in Graham. Growing up, Yanelie’s family didn’t have much money, but they always had each other. Then in her junior year of high school, her grandmother passed away. Lily’s Story When Lily came to Catholic Charities, she was living in a hotel and her car had been repossessed. Meanwhile, she was in school pursuing her goal to become a Medical Assistant. She came to us for help finding housing. Her motivation was clear: she knew her goals but needed case management support to put the pieces of her plan together. Lily’s top priority was creating a safe, long-term home for her two children. With the support of Catholic Charities’ case management services, Lily utilized every opportunity afforded to her and, in a mere seven months, meaningfully changed her li ..read more

I came to Fort Worth as a refugee on August 28, 2018.  At the time, I was living in temporary refugee housing in Malaysia with my wife and two children, but I am originally from Myanmar.    Myanmar is very corrupt and not safe.  In my hometown village, I was a teacher.  I’m from the Kachin ethnic group, and this is one of the ethnic groups that the government discriminates against.  Our culture is more similar to China than to Myanmar.    Because I was a teacher, that meant I was an educated person.  The government didn’t want Kachins to ..read more

Creating a Pathway to Success This year we have taken some big steps. We have partnered with St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church to expand our services in Eastland County to help more of our neighbors in need. This includes Working Family Services, a financial coaching program, and Parish Social Ministries, which connects those in need to supportive services and resources. We also expanded the Gabriel Project to Sacred Heart Parish in Wichita Falls. Gabriel Project is a CCFW parish-based ministry that pairs trained volunteers – or Angels – with women in crisis pregnancies. Angels accompany mo ..read more

In response to COVID-19, many public benefits and programs were adjusted to ensure families had continuous access to services. Since March 2020, the standard Medicaid re-eligibility determination has been paused to allow extended coverage to recipients. This extension will expire on March 31, 2023, when states will have to begin redetermining eligibility for Medicaid users. On April 1, 2023, the state will begin to disenroll ineligible Medicaid users. This will result in some populations losing their healthcare. It is very important for any current Medicaid recipient to update their contact ..read more

As we begin a new year, we are keenly aware of the challenging and complex dynamics faced by those we serve. Last year, the U.S. experienced an average inflation rate of 9.1%, including a 14.1% increase in the cost of housing and a 47.6% increase in the cost of energy. We haven’t seen inflation that steep in more than 40 years. This kind of dramatic shift disproportionately impacts low-income households, who are less prepared to absorb unexpected financial shocks.   That’s why we work with individuals and families to navigate challenges and build long-term stability. We create rese ..read more

“I want everyone to know about this,” the May graduate of Weatherford College said, after describing the practical and expansive help she received from Catholic Charities Fort Worth. “It made me a better mom. It helped me be a better student, it helped me be a better nurse.” The Peaster graduate, now 25, had known she wanted to be a nurse since one of her four brothers, Zachary, landed in the hospital — and their mother felt intense guilt over his burst appendix. “She was really beating herself up about it, and the nurses were so kind to her,” Heard recalled. “To see their compassion and kin ..read more
