Maynard James Keenan’s 60th birthday was April 17. To celebrate this milestone, he set out to put miles on the ground. Maynard and Les Claypool are similar musicians in that they are both extremely creative, passionate, and experimental with the concept of sound and how it’s made. Together they joined forces to go on tour under the name Sessanta. Primus, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle combined their gear to make one massive two-story stage with double-sided st ..read more

It’s only May and already 2024 has been packed with fantastic indie films breathing new life into stories that often get recycled over and over and over. Backspot reconsiders sports movie narratives through a queer story about competitive cheerleading. Sasquatch Sunset plays with format and actor transformation to tell a surprisingly moving story about a bigfoot family. In a Violent Nature turns the established slasher movie narrative on its head.
To that already impressive list, we can now add John Rosman’s debut feature New Life, a refreshing, resonant take on the ..read more

Students at a UMKC protest join a national wave of demonstrations supporting Palestine. (Suzanne King/The Beacon)
Protests, kindled by livestreamed images from Palestine and set ablaze by university crackdowns on demonstrators, rage at colleges and universities across the country.
Students have pitched encampments and occupied campus buildings while calling for an end to violence in Gaza — and demanding their institutions divest of companies they believe support the war there.

If you’re conscientious about what products you use on your skin, may we introduce you to Laura Rozell? Long before she took over the reins of Fire Lake Soapery in Paola, she’d been concocting and creating her own natural, vegan products. “My passion began at a very young age with being mindful of what we put in and on our bodies,” Rozell says. “I enjoy making products that help people who choose to support a healthier, toxin-free lifestyle.”
These days, she’s hyper-focused on making her famed, small-batch artisan soap. No toxins. No harsh chemicals.  ..read more

The Future Is Female entry display // Photo by Sarah Sipple
We’re home to some fabulous hotel options in Kansas City. One of them happens to also be an art museum focused on exhibiting art from this specific century, free of charge, 24 hours a day.
21c Museum Hotel Kansas City in the library district of downtown KC is a chain hotel, yes. But between the free admission to its gallery spaces and winning fan-favorite contests from publications like ours, 21c has been deemed a community favorite.
21c’s latest exhibit, The Future is Female, was welcomed to Kansas City on April 25 by Alice Gray S ..read more

In the waning hours of its 2024 veto session, the Kansas Legislature stumbled to and fro like a drunken sailor, pushing some bills into law, scrapping others, and holding its mouth closed tight to prevent itself from becoming violently ill.
Perhaps no single action from Thursday to Tuesday encapsulated members’ wayward legislating like the decision to earmark $15.7 million for Kansas National Guard troops to assist Texas law enforcement with ..read more
