"BUT....WE SHOULD BE HOMESCHOOLING RIGHT NOW!"

I can't count the number of times I've either said or thought this. You walk into the kitchen and there are dirty dishes and crap strewn from one end of the bench to the other. You start cleaning and you think, "but...we should be homeschooling right now!" Your washing machine packs it in and you spend time trying to troubleshoot the issue yourself, watching videos and learning about diagnostics, calling the lovely repair man to come by, taking washing to your daughter's house and you think, "but...we should be homeschooling right now!" You look at the baskets of washing on your dining table a ..read more

TAKING MY TIME

This year has been hard but good: both for a number of reasons. I won't go into all of them here and now but I know this blog has been a little on the quiet side so thought I'd give it a little update. x I'm taking time to work on passion projects that I've not the time or energy before to work on. Producing a play is a MASSIVE undertaking! So that has meant I've been online less with less time to blog but I'm still here. I'm still learning alongside my kiddos and we are going well. A dear friend of mine had booked a weekend stay out near Jenolan Caves but unfortunately couldn't go as her kid ..read more

WHAT LEARNING CAN LOOK LIKE

In the past 8 weeks since Zippi's Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis, we have had quite a bit going on. Some days you think you aren't doing much, but when you stand back and look at things over a few days or a few weeks or even a few months, you can see that you DO actually do lots of things! So, in this post I thought I'd just share a few examples in words and photos of some of the things we have been up to since Zippi's diagnosis in mid March. We of course had a week in hospital and had A LOT of information to take in. We've adjusted to lots of new technology, to learning about calculating carb exc ..read more

WHAT OUR HOMESCHOOLING RETREAT LOOKED LIKE

Well, our Inaugural THL Homeschooling Women's Retreat has now come and gone....and what a beautiful time it was! I feel so grateful to have time to restore with Tracey and Ali and Stassi while Ethan (my son who is a second year apprentice chef) cooked delicious and nutritious meals for us. I did share some photos and words on Facebook and Instagram but thought I'd do a post here too so it's easy to find in the future. I'm not gonna lie. Leading up to the retreat, I was pretty spent. It fell only 3 weeks after the day our daughter Zippi went into a moderate DKA state (diabetic coma) and was dia ..read more

HOMESCHOOLING WHEN YOU ARE EXHAUSTED

My body is sore and tired. My mind feels the same. It has been over two weeks since Zippi went into a moderate DKA state (diabetic ketoacidosis). I am still trying to process it as we go through the motions of life. Her night time insulin has had to be changed frequently and this means that I've had to set an alarm to wake her up at 12am and 3am each morning to do her blood pricks and checks. This is what she needs right now so it's of course what we do but it doesn't mean it's easy. My Lupus-y body is waking up fatigued and sore every morning. It hasn't helped that for 3 days in a row, the o ..read more

NOTEBOOKING AND HOW TO USE IT IN YOUR HOMESCHOOL
That Homeschool Life Blog
by Lusi Austin

What is notebooking? Notebooking is tool your child uses to record their own learning. There are many different approaches to it. Some people use it quite formally within the guidelines set out by Charlotte Mason. Others use it more casually. Pros of notebooking? Notebooking is a great way for your child to formulate their own thoughts based on reading they have completed and learning they have done. It's a great way to encourage independence in their thinking as they reflect, order and write down what they heard. It's a great way to meet the key learning area (kla) outcomes and it is a very e ..read more

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS THE HOMESCHOOLIEST HOMESCHOOLER
That Homeschool Life Blog

There is no such thing as the homeschooliest homeschooler. No awards exist for the best homeschooler around. There are no podiums to stand on, no one to call your name out on a stage and often not even a word of thanks for your efforts. So where's the reward? The reward is in the journey itself. It's in the connections you make with your kids. It's in the time you get to spend together, watching them stretch and grow and become themselves. It's in the gift of minutes and moments that really are immeasurable. Friend, this is your friendly, loving reminder that whilst myself and others share fr ..read more

I WANT YOU TO IMAGINE...
That Homeschool Life Blog

I want you to imagine yourself arriving in the beautiful Central West NSW town of Canowindra. Before you head into the township, you can feel yourself breathing more deeply as you look over the wide, open paddocks. You are off the clock for the first time in a while. You don't have to think about what you are going to prepare for dinner tonight. You don't have to listen for your children calling your name. You are already beginning to switch off. You can see the Weddin mountains in the distance against the beautiful, clear blue sky. The wide streets of Canowindra welcome you. You'll come and ..read more

CONNECTION IS KING

Many people begin their homeschooling journey thinking that the most important thing to do is to sort their curriculum. I often hear people who start from a place of wanting to replicate school in the home. Any long-time homeschooler will tell you this doesn't really work for most people. It certainly hasn't for us. Why? Because home is a whole different beast really. And I mean that in the best possible way ;) Home is where life happens: where dental appointments, back injuries and chronic illnesses happen. There are lost jobs to deal with, family relationship breakdowns, faulty car engines ..read more
