Tusk to Tail: Water, shade, and a running game were hard to find at War Memorial

It seems safe to say that the University of Arkansas is not so big on Little Rock. Player safety was the official reason given for moving the Razorbacks’ kickoff time at War Memorial Stadium back three hours to noon Saturday, but the difference in forecasts was a negligible three degrees. As tailgate tents suddenly sprung up across the former public golf course, someone joked that university officials were probably just too scared to stay in the Capital City after dark. It’s true, Little Rock tailgates tend to feature more cultural diversity than their Northwest Arkansas counterparts. The ..read more

The days leading up to the 64th Liberty Bowl matchup between Arkansas and Kansas were cold and dark for many Hog fans. Six Razorbacks’ starters and nearly 20 other players had entered the transfer portal or opted out of playing the bowl game to prepare for the NFL draft. Defensive Coordinator Barry Odom and Tight Ends Coach Dowell Loggains had left for other jobs, taking some of the players with them. Arkansas was left with gaping holes at wide receiver, tight end, linebacker, and the offensive and defensive lines. Even the Hogs’ best punter had left the building. Kansas was mostly unaffected ..read more

The work and fun on campus this season are just about wrapped up. The weather in Fayetteville for the Ole Miss game will be just about a carbon copy of last week against LSU, partly sunny and 42 degrees, then dropping as the sun sets and the game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN. We will set up around 9 a.m. Saturday to see if it will be a little warmer for us. Keep in mind that traffic will be shut down at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, but at least traffic should be better before the game with such a late start. There will be three important differences from last week. One, there will be no sun for anybo ..read more

Seasons change overnight in Fayetteville. Autumn was gone in an instant. Most fall leaves had fallen long before 80-degree midweek pool weather gave way to snow showers Friday night. Veteran’s Day combined with Dad’s Weekend for several Greek organizations led to an early departure for gamebound travelers. Saturday’s 11 a.m. kickoff against an old SEC rival and a basketball game Friday evening added extra incentive for fans to beat the arctic blast into Northwest Arkansas. The interstates were abuzz as we pulled into town Friday afternoon. Dale and Sam were already at the tailgate tents, batte ..read more

THE QUESTION What do you think about the Razorbacks basketball team this year? Craig: This is one of the more talented teams we’ve had at Arkansas. Give Coach Musselman credit; he’s one of the most aggressive recruiters in the country pulling in top talent from the high school ranks and the transfer portal. Devo Davis is the only player returning from last year’s team that played significant minutes. Nick Smith, Anthony Black and Jordon Walsh are elite freshman that Musselman can use in multiple spots on the court to facilitate the offense. Transfers Jalen Graham and Trevon Braz ..read more

What the hell was that? On homecoming Saturday, Sam Pittman and the Arkansas Razorbacks paid tribute to the bygone era of flat-footed detachment and disastrous incompetence that got Chad Morris fired. The 23rd ranked Liberty Flames humbled the Hogs 21-19, handing Pittman his first ever non-conference loss. Coach began his press conference dejectedly admitting, “You saw the same thing I did: a very, very, very poor showing by us in the first half.” Pittman gave credit to Coach Hugh Freeze, confessing that Arkansas was outcoached and outplayed by Freeze and his Flames. The disgraced former Ole M ..read more

THE QUESTION We have reached the final month of the regular season. Who do you think will play in the College Football Playoffs? Jeb: Ohio State, Clemson, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Ohio State has one tough game this year, Michigan, and they will not lose to them two years in a row. Clemson must play powerhouses such as Wake Forest and NC State. Snore. Right now, Tennessee has all the momentum and no injuries, so they are a lock to make it (I am hoping my powers of reverse psychology kick in). Okay, that last playoff team seems a bit of a long shot, but technically it can sti ..read more

Wow, what a whirlwind of a month. The Hogs have played eight games over the last nine weeks and so far I’ve been fortunate enough to make each one, plus a little extra. I’ve been in Fayetteville, Dallas, Nashville for work, Starkville, Salt Lake City, Little Rock for Chris Stapleton, Chicago for work, and finally Auburn. In the end, it was worth it. We had some great trips with our family of fans. The team seems to have found its legs for this stretch run of home games and the final game in Columbia, Mo. The offense is moving the ball and the defense is playing well against the ..read more

Tusk to Tail: Leaving Auburn with a win, and leaving Auburn without a coach

When ranking SEC road trips, Auburn is always near the top of Tusk to Tail’s list. The drive isn’t too bad, and we have experienced some success down there, which always helps. The small town of Auburn and its picturesque campus present the perfect setting for football in the fall. Toomer’s Corner, where the college intersects with charming historic downtown, practically becomes a Norman Rockwell painting sprung to life on game days. Rolling Toomer’s oaks after a victory and their War Eagle flying onto the field before the game are among the coolest traditions in college sports. What really se ..read more

THE QUESTION Auburn coach Bryan Harsin has come under fire in just his second season on The Plains.  Who do you think will be coaching at Auburn next year? Sean: Looking at it from a coach’s perspective, what is a coach getting into by going to Auburn? You’re the second team in the state, at best. Auburn has notoriously undercut their coaches since Tuberville and their rogue alumni call all the shots. I guarantee that Aubie has already talked to coaches, maybe even someone in Fayetteville (just guessing). You can write off coaches like Dave Aranda at Baylor or Mark Sto ..read more
