Welcome to Monday! Your song is by Phosphorescent because I saw them perform last night and I'm going to show you and tell you about it. ?si=aOBakQk7nvt_ec-Z If you've been hanging with me a while, you may have heard me say that things in my life are rarely linear. I come to things in roundabout ways, I can't always approach them directly. Phosphorescent was a name I had heard but the music wasn't really on my radar. Then I saw Australian Jo Schornikow open a show in 2022, and I immediately bought her album Altar and listened to it a lot. Probably my favorite song on Altar is "Visions", close ..read more

#guitarmonday on a Wednesday: 3 Canadians Walk Into a Bar in Nashville edition

Welcome to the first #guitarmonday of 2024! Somehow it didn't feel like showing up until March. It does what it wants. Anyway, your #guitarmonday song is a new one by my pals in Year of October, "Spell on Me." Disjointed days make for awkward scheduling, and that's what I've been having. Still, I felt it was worth telling you about and showing photos from two shows I was at on Thursday & Friday of last week. On Thursday, I went over to the OG Basement in Nashville to see Terra Lightfoot and Brandy Zdan rock out at an early show. And rock out they certainly did! Both women love rock-n-r ..read more

#imwiththeband: Blonde Redhead edition

Blonde Redhead (Kazu Makino, Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace) is a band that's been in my life since I met my partner 18 years ago. I never thought I'd see them live, much less get to photograph a performance. Imagine my joy when I snagged a photo pass for the Nashville show at the Basement East on 2.26! ?si=S5-aJSgo4fDq1g_x They came out and immediately launched into "Falling Man" from the Misery is a Butterfly album. That's one hell of a start, and they kept that energy up. When the 2007 album 23 came out, I listened to it a lot. I couldn't have told you song titles then, but it played on a l ..read more

2023: THE YEAR IN PHOTOS

I'll remember 2023 for several reasons, but one is that my beloved Screaming Females decided to disband after 18 years. I'm now doubly glad that I saw them in Lexington, KY in 2022. So let's listen to a song from their 2023 album 'Desire Pathway' while we look at photos, shall we? ?si=4Qg2g3KiAvWnbZdf I'm finding myself at a loss for words at the end of this year. I'll show you the year in photographs, instead. As ever, it was about Music, Portraits, and Weirdness - and if you've been following me around for a while, you know these three things are irrevocably entwined ..read more

It's been a hot minute! Instead of beating on myself because my most recent blog post was in July, I'm going to remind myself that I've been most very occupied with the future of Punk Rock Photography & this blog. I'm also sure that with all the words and music and photos on the internet, you haven't really missed me. Regardless, we're here now. Your song is by Nation of Language, a band I love that combines synthpop with live guitar. I was delighted to see them in Nashville in early November. "Weak in Your Light" is my favorite from their new album. ?si=5S6foNB3OxL4Wrx0 I want to tell y ..read more

#guitarmonday on a Tuesday: Another Saturday in Nashville edition

#guitarmonday was nearly on Monday this week, but nope, not quite. Your song "Sugar the Pill" is by one of my favorite Nashville bands, Sound & Shape. I discovered them at a different band's show a few years back and was immediately blown away and entered into my fandom. They were kind enough to give me a photo pass for their Saturday July 15th show at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville with King's X. Everybody wins! But before I went to Brooklyn Bowl, I started out my rock and roll day at DRKMTTR Collective, for the "Migraine Matinee" show including The Shanks, Seize and Desist ..read more

Your #guitarmonday song is from the fantastic new Bully album, "Lucky for You".  This blog post is going to be chock-full of Nashville musicians and music. It's Nashville-riffic! On June 17th, while thousands of people were moving and grooving at Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, TN, I stayed in Nashville. There was plenty happening that night right here in town, especially in the underground and small venues (which is kind of where I live). The 5 Spot and The Cobra are both in East Nashville, 1.3 miles apart - and I was able to see three very ..read more

#guitarmonday on a Tuesday: Clan of Xymox Edition

#guitarmonday rolls in on a Tuesday this week, in between days and jobs. Sunday night I was out photographing the Clan of Xymox show in Nashville, with openers Bellhead and The Bellwether Syndicate. So in honor of that, your #guitarmonday song is a Clan of Xymox track I used to toss into the mix when I used to dj in Madison, WI (a long time ago and another life away). I am happy to report that Clan of Xymox is still really great, and still making new music. I have to give a shout-out here to the crew at Fascination Street Nashville for putting this show ..read more

Welcome to #guitarmonday! Here's my favorite Year of October song, 'Thistle', from their upcoming album 'Keep on Fighting' due out in May (but you can preorder it right now, here: Keep on Fighting). This blog post could also be called "#Guitarmonday: In Praise of Badass Women Edition", for that's what it will be. What better time than Women's History Month to officially unveil my Queens of Noise project?  No better time. Anyway. Since 2021 I've been photographing women musicians in Nashville, each one a phenomenal human and creator. The working title of this series is ..read more

#guitarmonday: Archers of Loaf indie rock edition

Happy 2023, everyone! The first #guitarmonday of the year rolls in with photos of and music by indie rockers Archers of Loaf. Archers of Loaf has a new album out, "Reason in Decline", and it's freaking terrific, honestly. Your #guitarmonday song is from the album. Archers of Loaf is one of those bands that was not on my radar during the 1990s, but totally should have been. If I'd been paying attention, I'd have loved them. But I'm a firm believer that it's never too late to discover music. I don't hold with the theory that only the newest music is relevant; I'm not always seeking the ne ..read more
