The New York Yankees are about to lose a voice almost as notable as the legendary “Voice of God” Bob Sheppard. Longtime radio play-by-play man John Sterling is retiring, effective immediately, at the ripe old age of 85.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported the immediacy of Sterling’s retirement. Earlier in the afternoon, Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported Sterling would address his future in a Friday press conference. Now, the press conference will be Saturday at Yankee Stadium along with a ceremony honoring Sterling before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The New York Yankees are in first place, and fairly comfortably! The Bronx Bombers are 12-4, the best team in baseball, and hold a 2.5 game lead over second-place Baltimore in the AL East.
And yet, on this lovely Monday morning in New York City, Yankees fans on social media are back to their usual one-track mind. We’ll sum it up in one statement from Jomboy:
The Yankees infield defense is a problem.

For context, New York blew a 7-5 lead in extra innings in Cleveland on Sunday. It cost the Yankees the series sweep, though they did sweep the Saturday doublehe ..read more

Aaron Judge looked like his old self when he smashed a three-run home run against the Guardians on Sunday.
Facing lefty Logan Allen, Judge hit a hanging sweeper into the deepest part of the left field bleachers. It hit the back row of seats before bouncing forward again. Statcast measured the blast at 469 feet with exit velocity at 114 mph.

The New York Yankees are 10-3 to start the year, and they’ve barely needed team captain and former MVP Aaron Judge!
No, seriously. Amid the Bronx Bombers’ hot start, Aaron Judge has been a near non-factor. The big slugger is batting just .178 on the year with a pair of homers and six RBI. New teammate Juan Soto, meanwhile, is thriving in Judge’s former No. 2 spot in the lineup, batting .360 with a 1.008 OPS, two home runs and 12 RBI. His on-base percentage (OBP) is an astounding .468.
And in fairness to Judge, he’s still an on-base machine! His OBP sits at .367 thanks to his AL-leading 14 walk ..read more

Juan Soto electrified an already rambunctious Yankee Stadium crowd on Monday night when he launched his first home run in the Bronx.
Facing Miami Marlins lefty Jesus Luzardo, Soto’s three-run homer was a moonshot down the right field line. It was his second home run of the season. Statcast measured it at 384 feet with a modest exit velocity, just 87.4 mph.

The New York Knicks were dealt a devastating blow courtesy of ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Star power forward Julius Randle, in the midst of another great season, will have surgery on his dislocated right shoulder. He will not return this season.

The headline is admittedly misleading because, in all honesty, Anthony Volpe had a pretty okay rookie season in 2023.
He took home a Gold Glove at shortstop, an incredibly hard task, and finished eight in AL Rookie of the Year voting. He even had a 20-20 season, finishing with 21 and 24, respectively. The only downside to Volpe’s first pro season was he posted a meager line of .209/.283/.383 with a .666 OPS. Now add 167 ugly strikeouts and his strikeout rate (K%) finishing in the 19th percentile.
Not exactly inspiring numbers from the future franchise shortstop, are they?
Well, the critics now ..read more

The New York Yankees were in Houston to start their season while the crosstown rival New York Mets hosted the Brewers in Flushing. It was an epic weekend for both teams, and yet for completely opposite reasons.
In four games, the Yankees finally looked like general manager Brian Cashman’s long-made comparison: A fully operational Death Star. Emperor Palpatine himself would be impressed with these Bronx Bombers, especially after how they handled the longtime nemesis Houston Astros. But more on that in a few.
The Mets, on the other hand, looked largely unchanged, even with new manager Carlos Men ..read more
