By Deb Seymour ~ March 7, 2023 I’ve been on a short hiatus from this blog since December; life’s just been super busy. But I’m extremely grateful for how many people have inquired about the blog over the past three months. And, it couldn’t be a better time to write about the NY Rangers, because they’ve decided to reinvent themselves yet again during the culmination of their rebuild — and with limited cap space, to boot. That cap space will be so limited in the upcoming off-season, the Rangers need to both go for it now and make some tough roster decisions come summer. GM Chris Drury has been b ..read more

“Play Like Mika”: The NY Rangers’ Filip Chytil

by Deb Seymour ~ December 15, 2022 Last season, when the NY Rangers’ bottom six was scuffling, head coach Gerard Gallant reportedly told third line center Filip Chytil that he should try to “play like Mika (Zibanejad).” That conversation, no matter how it actually unfolded in real life, seemed to be a catalyst for Chytil — who’s spent the better portion of five seasons with the NHL team though he’s still only 23 years old. Chytil’s had a bit of a bumpy road between his AHL and NHL days, falling victim to multiple injuries and getting bounced around a bit between center and wing. But one import ..read more

How to Decide? The Aaron Judge Dilemma

by Deb Seymour ~ December 1, 2022 We all know by now the Yankees’ Hal Steinbrenner-Brian Cashman regime isn’t in the habit of signing their young players, even their really good ones, to long-term deals before they even reach their first arbitration. We’ve also seen them trade for young players without immediately locking them up for the long term (Gleyber Torres, primarily, comes to mind — though there have been others). Sometimes, this strategy has paid off. It’s unlikely anyone would argue Gary Sanchez is the best catcher — nor the most productive hitter — in the league, and one of the reas ..read more

Lightning in a Bottle

by Deb Seymour ~ November 11, 2022 Trade deadlines in sports are about trying to catch lightning in a bottle; and last season, the NY Rangers actually managed to do it. That’s not to say the Rangers caught the Tampa Bay Lightning in a bottle — because they certainly didn’t. But they caught just enough lightning to make it through the playoffs to the Eastern Conference Finals; and had they played their best hockey in the postseason, they likely would have made it through the ECF to the Stanley Cup Finals. The team’s most notable trades conducted prior to the March 21st deadline were for Andrew ..read more

Saquon Barkley: At Long Last

by Deb Seymour ~ October 25, 2022 When Saquon Barkley was drafted by the NY Giants in 2018, the anticipation of his arrival among Giants fans was rather spectacular. The Giants opted not to draft a quarterback that year, and not everyone in either the fan base nor the media agreed with that decision. Following the tradition of some of the more recent top Giants running backs such as Tiki Barber, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Brandon Jacobs, Barkley was surrounded by high expectations. Perhaps even higher. And yet he seemed to have the right personality to play for a New York metro area team with an unfo ..read more

Buck Showalter and His Upgraded Mets

by Deb Seymour ~ April 19, 2022 When hedge fund mogul Steve Cohen acquired the New York Mets, expectations for the team by both the fan base and the baseball world in general shifted considerably from where they were entrenched during the regime of the previous ownership. Cohen is a baseball fan, and a Mets fan, in particular; and he pledged to upgrade the team and to pay attention to its fans from day one of his tenure as owner — at all levels. CitiField is already a beautiful ballpark with rather appealing amenities, so not much was required there (although a special sensory nook has just be ..read more

New Season, New NY Rangers Roster

by Deb Seymour ~ October 1, 2022 One of the most tantalizing and yet slippery aspects of major league sports is the trade deadline. Not because some of the worst trades happen at that time, despite some of the best trades occurring. Not because suddenly one new player can trick you into thinking that your team is actually good. And not because most trades that happen mid-season are like one coat of paint when you really needed several: easily scratched off to reveal what’s underneath — which may be ugly at worst, or questionable at best. No, trade deadlines are a tease because they almost neve ..read more

NY Ranger Alexis Lafreniere and His TOI

by Deb Seymour ~ August 30, 2022 Traveling down a rabbit hole in search of some information this week, I happened to look up how much Alexis Lafreniere’s TOI increased from his rookie season to last season. Change in head coach, change in teammates, change in season duration (all 82 games were played, as opposed to 56 in the pandemic-shortened season of 2020-2021) — you’d think all that might have impacted his average time on ice. And it did. By exactly .06 minutes. Yes, you read that correctly. In his rookie season, Lafreniere averaged 13:53 minutes on the ice per game. In his sophomore seaso ..read more

NY Yankee Harrison Bader is Back Home

by Deb Seymour ~ August 4, 2022 This is the kind of story baseball fans love to hear. It’s a story about a player who grew up a fan of the team for whom he’ll now be playing; a story about a player who lived throughout his childhood near that very team’s ballpark; and a story about a player who always dreamed of playing for his favorite team. Harrison Bader was born in Bronxville, NY and grew up playing shortstop in the Eastchester Little League, with his father pitching to him every night from when he was five years old. He attended Horace Mann High School in Riverdale in the Bronx, and playe ..read more

It’s a Team Sport — Or is it?

by Deb Seymour ~ July 14, 2022 Someone remarked to me last week that “baseball isn’t like hockey or basketball or football or soccer, which are team sports.” Baseball, the claim went, “is an individual sport because pitchers pitch individually, players take at-bats individually, and all of them make a lot of the plays in the field individually. “ And somehow, after hearing that, I was shook — as we used to say. I felt the need to deconstruct that statement — because while baseball isn’t like hockey or basketball or soccer, in which there’s an awful lot of passing a puck or a ball among players ..read more
