When the Route Fire burned about 5,000 acres near Castaic in August 2022, prompting closure of the 5 Freeway at The Grapevine followed by weeks of lane closures for repairs, motorists exited onto The Old Road detour, bringing traffic misery to the Santa Clarita Valley. Detours from the primary north-south freeway link between Southern and Northern California also occur during snowstorms, fog, flooding and road work, repeating the scenario ad nauseam with miles of snarled traffic both on the freeway and along the deteriorating side road. Sporting snowshoes and stylish shades, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday trundled around a summit south of Lake Tahoe with state water officials to unveil a “roadmap to resilience” for the state’s fickle water supply and to confirm good news from an army of sensors scattered throughout the Sierra: California’s end-of-season snowpack haul is blessedly above normal. The crucial April reading clocked in at 110% of normal, state water officials said Tuesday — a harbinger of a reliable water supply during the upcoming dry summer months. Last year, the April snowpack reading hit an astounding 244% of nor ..read more

Drizzle arriving on Friday provided a preview of light to moderate rain and colder temperatures that are forecast throughout the Bay Area this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Widespread showers moved into the central coast of the Bay Area early in the day, due to a low-pressure system coming from the Gulf of Alaska. The prefrontal rain, associated with a warm front, was likely to pass by Friday evening, NWS meteorologist Rachel Kennedy said. The rain, which is expected to carry into Saturday in some areas, will give most lowland areas in the East Bay, South Bay and Central ..read more

By ADAM BEAM | Associated Press SACRAMENTO — It’s become a rite of summer in sunny California: When the temperature spikes, so do electricity bills, leaving some customers with monthly payments over $500. A big reason for that is the way California’s largest power companies calculate rates. The more power you use, the more money you pay — not just for electricity, but also for things like maintaining the grid and reducing wildfire risk. A proposal unveiled Wednesday by state regulators aims to change that. Instead of calculating bills based mostly on how much power people use, a portion would ..read more
