A year ago, thousands of Californians trekked to nature preserves and scenic hillsides to enjoy the epic "superbloom" of wildflowers that followed one of the wettest and snowiest winters on record. The blooms were so vivid and abundant they were even visible from space. Fast forward to Spring 2024 and, after another extraordinarily wet and snowy winter, there was hope a “superbloom” would materialize again. Unfortunately, it hasn’t - and experts say that's largely the result of the weather and the end of the drought. “Last year's 'superbloom' was preceded by a significant drought,” says Naomi ..read more

A large section of Topanga Canyon Boulevard will likely remain closed until the fall as Caltrans works to clear a massive landslide that buried the scenic road and continues to pose a safety risk, officials acknowledged on Thursday. The slide occurred on March 9 during an intense rainstorm that caused flooding and mudslides in many areas of Southern California, including Los Angeles County. State Road 27 was immediately closed from Grand View Drive to Pacific Coast Highway. Caltrans estimates that 9.2 million pounds of earth, or 4,600 tons, gave way just south of the town of Topanga, sending a ..read more

Southern California's weather is about to take a hard left turn. After a stretch of ideal spring days with highs in the upper 70s and 80s, a low-pressure system will sweep through the region this weekend, bringing cooler temperatures and rain. “A ridge of high pressure over SoCal is breaking down and sliding to the east,” said KTLA 5 News weather anchor Kaj Goldberg. “As that happens, it will allow the clouds to begin to fill in as the cold front moves in.” Daytime high temperatures will drop by about 10 degrees on Friday in most locations. When the rain arrives Saturday, much of Southern Cali ..read more

After a rainy start to spring, sunny skies and warmer temperatures are expected to hit Southern California this week. A cold storm that rolled into Southern California on Thursday evening will continue into Friday, providing a gloomy day with light but prevalent rain. The National Weather Service said colder temperatures will run in tandem with rainfall coming in at less than one-half of an inch in most low-elevation places throughout the day Friday. There was about a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms in most areas, meaning that heavier rain in short amounts of time could briefly occur. KTLA's Henry DiCarlo said Friday's weather resembles a winter day. "It's just like December, right? This is April," he said. "W ..read more
