In 2021 the French Ministry of Culture launched a vast arts project, selecting 200 photographers for what they called la Grande commande photojournalisme (literally, The Large Photojournalism Order) with a designated theme – Snapshot of France: visions of a country having traversed a pandemic. It turned out to be the biggest governmental photo project in Europe, with a budget of 5.46 million euros. The exhibition France in Their Eyes – 200 photographers look at the 2020s at the French National Library (not far from our hotels) shows 450 photos from the project, selected from the 2,000 brand n ..read more

Paris’ Fashion Museum has a new exhibition of the famous Italian photographer Paolo Roversi, with 50 years of iconic imagery on view – the first ever Parisian exhibition of his work. Born in Italy but a Paris resident since 1973, Paolo Roversi created his own style of fashion photography over the years, using odd colours (thanks to innovative development techniques), blurring effetcs (from long exposures) and a hybrid of black & white and sepia tones that make his work unique. You probably know his photos from the biggest fashion magazines, showcasing the most famous models wearing cloth ..read more

In tandem with a new book showcasing her work, Quai de la Photo (not far from our hotels) has a free exhibition of her photos on offer that we recommend seeing. © Kate Barry Quai de la Photo is an unusual arts space that opened last summer. Here’s a lovely Christmas present for photography lovers – the Grand Palais Éphémère, not far from our hotels, is hosting the largest exhibition ever of photos by Juergen Teller. Don’t tarry though – surprisingly the event only lasts three weeks and finishes early January 2024, just before the photographer’s 60th birthday, and will next be shown in Milan. Since the early 1990s, Juergen Teller has created a very personal, no-holds-barred style of photography, producing portraits, themed series and fashion shoots. More recently, he and his family have increasingly become the focus of his work ..read more

The Cartier-Bresson Foundation has two new exhibitions on offer, one of the work of American photographer Paul Strand (1890-1976), and the other juxtaposing shots of Mexico from Cartier-Bresson and Helen Levitt (1913-2009). © Aperture Foundation Inc., Paul Strand Archive. Fundación MAPFRE Collections The exhibition of photos by Paul Strand explores not only his much commented ‘direct photography’ style (with many striking portraits) but also his political activities, as these eventually led to him leaving the USA (more or less forcibly) to live in France. The prestigious and venerable Roger-Viollet photo agency opens a new exhibition in its presentation space near our hotels, showing women in the 20th century, their emancipation and the struggle to achieve it. Astonishingly, it’s only at the beginning of the 20th century that girls (“the weaker sex”) started to receive the same education as boys in France, giving the possibility of aspiring to be something other than a wife or mother. Over the decades (and two World Wars), women’s role in society changed, generally through struggles led… by women – suffragettes, female political activists, ph ..read more
