When we say “Barrel Aged” coffee that is exactly what it means- we age our green (pre roasted) coffee in Whiskey Barrels provided to us from the wonderful folks at Bull Run Distillery. Every so often we need to replace our barrels. Each new barrel comes from different products that Bull Run produces and bring a different nuance to our coffee. This latest barrels we received from Bull Run were used to make their Madiera Finished, Single Malt Whiskey and they have done some marvelous things to our coffee. The beans have taken on some of the same tasting notes of hi ..read more

Our Trip to Costa Rica and the Coffee of the Santa Elena Estate

This past spring Susan and I were able to take a few weeks off to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our destination of choice? Costa Rica. We rented a 4x4 with tent topper and camping set up for water, cooking, and relaxing. This gave us the flexibility to drive around the amazing country and camp out around other wonderful people enjoying the country in a similar way.  It was so beautiful. We forded a few rivers, camped in the wild watching amazing birds and reptiles while listening to howler monkeys call to one another. One morning we woke up watching the sunrise with ..read more

Spring is finally here, and it feels like we can stop holding our breath at last. Exhale winter’s cold, wet funk and inhale the fresh, balmy, flower-scented breezes. Although jewel-toned crocus and cheerful yellow daffodils tend to arrive first on the scene, it’s the explosion of pink cherry blossom confetti which truly kicks off the season. In Japanese folktales, the cherry blossom—or sakura—represents life’s fleeting journey. Experts at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden explain that their showcase season usually lasts less than a month, with individual trees only flowering for a week or two. Even ..read more

Snow—at home amidst the hustle and bustle of work, school, holiday activities, and errand-running—can be a bit of a nuisance. But step away from the workaday grind and set out for a nature hike on one of Oregon’s many stunning trailheads, and it provides a glorious, filter-free, #Insta-worthy effect…and great reason to pack a thermos or two of Cascadia Coffee. Unlike our midwestern cousins, winters in the Pacific Northwest are typically mild. But don’t take things too much for granted. Hike Oregon reminds us that “Winters in Oregon can vary wildly in weather and snow conditions from ye ..read more

“Do you sell espresso beans?”
Cascadia Coffee Roasters Blog
by Jason Thomas

This is a question we get quite often from online customers. The simple answer….Yes! However, the questions is a bit of a rabbit hole of information to really answer that question. In the 90’s it was rather common while shopping for coffee to see an “Espresso” blend on the shelf. This communicated a bit of a misnomer as “Espresso” is not a blend or roast profile, but a method for making coffee. All coffee can be brewed as espresso…but don’t stop reading here!  When a company identifies something as an “Espresso Blend” it merely means “this is the way we love to make espresso.” At Cascad ..read more

Autumn Hikes in the Pacific Northwest

In the Pacific Northwest, autumn’s amazing colors tend to arrive in one of two ways. Either as a vibrant rainbow against the crisp backdrop of ever-decreasing daylight or in the short-lived flurries of a winter storm. But while they’re here, hiking in the fall colors is a breathtaking experience for outdoorsy folks at every age. Oregon is an amazing destination for hikers 365 days of the year, but autumn is particularly stunning.
