Article: Neil Williams (Canberra Organic – Summer 2023) Neil Williams – COGS President Welcome to the Summer 2023 edition of Canberra Organic. The spring just past proved to be a busy period across our gardens and for the Executive. Garden events – connecting with the community Crace Garden celebrated its 10th anniversary with an Open Day in September. It was well attended (see page 6). Kambah Garden, in collaboration with SEE Change, hosted a very successful composting workshop presented by Fiona Buining from Ainslie Urban Farm in early September (see page 8). Article and Photos: Ed Highley (Canberra Organic – Spring 2023) For a few years now, I’ve had good results using a ‘solution’ of the organic fertiliser and soil conditioner ‘Dynamic Lifter’. My formula is to load about 400 g of the pellets into a 2 L milk container (so, 200 g per L), add water, give it a good shake, then let it ‘mature’ for a while, giving it another good shake from time to time and when you come to use it. You could add 40–50 mL Seasol for added plant health. I use about 500 mL of my ‘concentrate’ per 9 L watering can. I cannot vouch for any pure science for the quantities i ..read more

Article: Neil Williams (Canberra Organic – Winter 2023) Neil Williams – COGS President A warm welcome to the winter 2023 issue. This is my first article as President. Firstly, I would like to pay tribute to former President, Andy Hrast, for his steady stewardship during the past few difficult years. This, together with his work for COGS over a long period, was rewarded with a Life Membership. See more on our new Life Members, Andy Hrast and Terry Williams, in this edition. I would also like to thank former Editor, Rebecca Travers, for her work in delivering a high-quality magazine for our memb ..read more

Around the time I visited the garden (see Canberra Organic, Winter 2023), I delved into its name and history. I found that St Erth was an Irishman who lived some one thousand seven hundred years ago from 424-514, was baptised by the aged St Patrick and became Bishop of Slane. He crossed to Cornwall, where he and his brothers (St la and St Uny) established churches, and the village of St Erth near St Ives dates back to this time. The stone cottage in the Garden of St Erth was named in 1854 by the Cornish stonemason Matthew Rogers, in remembrance of his Cornish birthplace. Initially pursuing gol ..read more

A tale of renewal after Canberra’s bushfires Article: (Canberra Organic – Autumn 2023) After one our wettest years on record in 2022, it is hard to fathom the events that occurred twenty years ago. On Wednesday 18 January 2023, Canberra marked twenty years since two large bushfires — that began in the Brindabellas and Namadgi — combined to wreak havoc on our western fringes. The Holder community garden was in the path of the fire, damaging the garden and leaving its mark on the lives of members and people in the surrounding community. Two years prior the Betty Cornhill community garden also su ..read more
