Hey folks,
The quarterly bowie challenge got me inspired to try my hand at one, so I'm gonna give it a go... I'm looking for a reputable source of Damascus.
The last bit I ordered was from jtknives, but they aren't selling any more.
Anyone have a good source?
Thanks ..read more

Just picked up a vacmaster 8 gal shop vac... This is one of those things I wonder why I didn't get earlier. Not only does it have excellent suction power but it has 4 stages of filtration, the final 2 being HEPA rated which is awesome considering what we grind many times.
I love that it has a 10ft hose and a 30 ft cord too.
Just thought I'd share ..read more

Due to health problems, I am no longer making commercial damascus for sale. It’s been a good run. I will make some for my own projects.
I made my first damascus in 1986, started selling it around ‘89, went full time in the early ‘90’s.
We inovated several things that most makers use to this day.
It’s a sad day for me.
Thanks to all who have helped and supported us over the years.

Hello everyone , so I have this recurring problem for quite some time now , when I don't have to make many blades at same time , I just go and hand sand it out with a hard backing.
But when you have to make a few , its pain in the but...
Whenever I am making scandi grinds , always about 2" from the ricasso I have the sanding dent , before you jump in here's my thoughts and two cents
It could be the backing issue, but whenever I free hand sand I don't have this problem...
It could be the...

Need some guidance and expertise please
This surface grinder is USA made, however I'm in France. Thus it has some wiring change to 380v 3-phase to make it run for whoever owned it here in France.
My shop voltage in France is 230 V, 50 Hz.
The GE motor is 220/380 3 phase. I'll need to get some phase converter or vfd. But I need to get the right one
So I understand that the motor can be wired for 220 or 380 depending on the number of wires and the placement on the motor.
So I can...

Has anyone used stainless steel tubing as a canister for welding? As it is hard to forge weld I would think it should be easier to remove than carbon steel ..read more

Some woods are stabilized (plasticized) by forcing the agent into the wood under pressure. Was wondering what difference (pros/cons) are there between this method and more common "vacuum" way of accomplishing the same ?
For DIY types, vacuum way is definitely more established - with folx reporting success with setups as simple as hand vacuum pumps and plastic containers.
Would pressure way be as simple as dropping some wood into a pressure vessel like...

When I got the Ames Model 1, it was immediately apparent that it would be nice to have three hands to operate it. They offer a factory bench stand, but at $350 + shipping......I'll pass. Some scrap aluminum, JB Weld, a couple of hours in the shop, and done. I use my welding fixture table as a work bench quite often, so for now, that's where I'll use it. Will get a couple of knobs for tool free mounting, the bolts are temporary. Or perhaps bolt it to a heavy chunk of metal, and make it...
