I build knives in my spare time for friends & family. Im looking to build a blade for a machinist friend. It would be an EDC blade he would use while at work. when I sent him a photo of my suggested design, he asked if it was possible to add a Pry-Tab off the handle end. Is this even a good idea or feasible? Im thinking of using either AEB-L or 1095 (its what I have at the moment) Im a little worried it will either chip or create a twist to the tang loosening the scales. Im not sure... All new at knifemaking and time for me to get into it. Been collecting and saving equipment for a while. Have a Cootes 2x72 grinder and need ideas to build the table. Have a hard time searching for this. I have a 2.5 hp 1725 rpm motor and ordering a 3 step pulley 2,3,4". Question I have is the grinder table setup. Looking for the proper starting height, if too tall I can cut the legs down. I am thinking of something like a 16x24 plywood tabletop and the motor on bottom shelf with belts... Read more ..read more

Scenario: You are making a full tang knife with a dark etched blade. You put on your handle scales and grind out your handle shape. You finish up your handle nicely to a high grit. Here is the thing, when you are finishing your handle shape, there are many times when you have to sand the exposed steel of the tang part of the knife. In my limited experience I see this causes the etch on that area to become lighter. Now you have one finish on the spine of the blade and a different finish (due... Read more ..read more

So, my dad is a retired machinist, occasional knife maker, and former IPSC champion in the state of Washington. He's made blades for a handful of family and friends over the years. He's the one who started me on my path of appreciation for the sharp and pointy. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer several years ago....stage 4. He is currently the last surviving member of a trial program in Seattle. He's brave, his spirit is indomitable, and I'm glad he's hung around long enough to see the... Read more ..read more
