Sorry it’s been a minute since I posted! X-Wing is going through a transitional time period here. The last “official AMG” competitive season is kicking off, with the same points from Worlds still active. Meanwhile, the fan collective X-Wing Alliance is working to keep the game alive for as many players, new and old, as possible. I think they’ve got the right people in the right places–and I’m sure I’ll have more thoughts later–but it’s hard to say how they’re doing until they release their first points update. All glory is fleeting… Well, it happened. That is to say, with no new product announcements for over a year, and all but one of the products that were announced as being in development by Atomic Mass Games formally released, we now have it confirmed that X-Wing, and the other Star Wars pre-painted miniature game, Armada, are no longer being actively developed. Three nights ago I got back from a six-day trip to Schaumburg and Chicago, IL, most of which was spent at Adepticon 2024. I was part of close to a dozen Austin, TX folks traveling to compete in the X-Wing World Championship, and/or several of the side events. We weren’t alone. Per rollbetter.gg, there were 104 players in the Last Chance Qualifier, and 311 at the World Championship. Since only 7 invites were given out at the LCQ, that’s a total of 408 players. With Worlds about 2 months away–which is almost the same amount of time it’s been since I’ve gotten serious practice–I’m managing my expectations and right now it’s somewhere in the vicinity of “make some new friends and have fun.” I am at least not starting from scratch–I have been practicing with the Empire faction, quite deliberately, all season, with the result that I’m pretty comfortable flying Darth Vader and the TIE Bombers.
