This year’s prep began the day we landed from Reno 2017. We had just pushed the plane faster than ever, and my inadvertent mixture bump caused us to pull up from the Gold Race on Sunday. The good news was we didn’t break anything and had a great baseline.
We started with the engine overhaul to see how the new piston fit was working and if the high power had caused any cranktrain or crankcase issues. We were pleasantly surprised as the engine looked great inside. The team at Pinnacle Engines in Alabama continued the rebuild process, while we were busy back in Virgini ..read more

Mathias Haid Wins!
Mathias Haid overcame what most people would consider a hard start to a week of racing with a complete engine change. RENO, Nev. (November 13, 2020) – After the heartache of canceling the 2020 National Championship Air Races due to COVID-19, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) is determined to bring the world’s fastest motorsport back to the high desert of Northern Nevada in 2021, but it won’t be possible without additional support. All of us at the Sport Class Air Racing Association fully support Reno Air Racing Association’s decision to cancel the National Championship Air Races 2020 event. It is tough news to bear, but it is the right call. The decision puts us all in the safest and most assured position to be a part of the National Championship Air Races 2021. We will miss seeing our September family this year, but rest assured, we will all be putting the intervening time to good use to develop our race aircraft and our racing skills to come back faster, better and safer for September 2021.
