Anglers in the Golden State will likely face reduced bag limits on vermillion rockfish this coming season. Jim Hendricks
No species is more closely associated with California rockfishing than the popular vermillion (aka red) rockfish. But with the 2024 season about to get underway (on April 1 in the state’s southern waters), anglers in much of the Golden State are learning that they can keep far fewer of these popular ocean bottom fish.
Fishery regulators have slashed the daily sub-limit for vermillion rockfish to just two per day in four of California’s five Groundfish Management Areas. In t ..read more

Fish are fickle and so are fishermen. Everyone has seen a sportfish turn its nose at a perfectly good bait. And, everyone knows an angler who turns his nose at targeting a perfectly good sportfish. While tarpon, white marlin, striped bass and other high-profile species get all the love, lowly targets like false albacore, ribbonfish, sheepshead and bluefish don’t get the respect they deserve.
In some cases, these lowly species gain attention during the offseason. On other accounts, the unappreciated species is a plan B after a high-profile species is depleted or strictly regulated. But a small ..read more

Various tuna species swim in oceans around the world. The Atlantic bluefin tuna is the grandest of them all; huge, sleek, warm-blooded, the king of Atlantic waters both warm and cold. Some places are known for their big tuna: the Outer Banks, the Canadian Maritimes, and the Gulf coast, for example. But lately, tuna are turning up in surprising places, as efforts to reverse overfishing begin to pay off. With numbers of Atlantic bluefin on the increase, the leviathans are turning up in surprising locations along European coasts. Here’s a look at a few of them.

Double up on Spanish mackerel while you can; eventually, these speedsters get suspicious of wire leaders. George Poveromo
Florida anglers, especially those in the Florida Keys, can practically set their watches to the start of the Spanish mackerel run. Once water temperatures drop into the low 70s, staggering quantities invade Florida Bay. Materializing by December, they’ll remain through May, barring a warm winter. After Florida, Spanish mackerel head to North Carolina in April, then as far north as Massachusetts in June.
Catching Spanish mackerel in Florida Bay involves anchoring in very ..read more

OneNet offers greater bandwidth than N2K. Chris Malbon/Debut Art
For years, NMEA 2000 has served as the proven and trusted digital “language” for networking marine electronics, as well as other onboard systems such as engines, pumps, air conditioning and more, tying them together for monitoring and control. Also known as N2K, NMEA 2000 was developed by National Marine Electronics Association (hence the acronym), which counts among its members all of the major marine electronics manufacturers and retailers.
Today, however, a new system has emerged from the NMEA. It’s called OneNet, and i ..read more

Some tricks can fix a motor on the spot. But if all else fails, a tow back home is in order. A membership with a towing service is worth the investment. Courtesy Sea Tow Services International Inc.
One of the worst feelings in fishing is when you turn the key to head home and nothing happens. Fortunately, if a modern DFI four-stroke outboard is cranking, it will invariably start. That’s not to say you can’t have an issue. But if your motor successfully took you offshore and is turning over, there’s every likelihood it’s going to fire up, provided your batteries are up to snuff and you have ga ..read more
