How do I use LUKS encrypted partitions with Kubuntu 24.10 installation?

I am trying to install Kubuntu 24.10 with manual partitioning. I have created primary partitions for EFI and boot, and an encrypted partition with logical volumes for swap, root, and home. Previously, after this step I just run the Kubuntu installer, manually assigned /dev/mapper/vg0-* partitions for root, home, and swap, as well as the primary partitions for /boot/efi and /boot, and it all worked ok. But in Kubuntu 24.10 the installer changed, and now I'm not sure what I should do. There are separate dropdown items for the whole disk and for the mounted logical volume, and the installer sugg ..read more

Laptop keyboard not working when trying to install various flavours of Ubuntu from live USB

Today I have acquired a new laptop, Maibenben X565, with pre-installed Kubuntu 22.10. Kubuntu 22.10 is no longer supported, so I wasn't able to update and install packages I need, and was forced to install another version of Linux. So I downloaded Ubuntu 23.10, created a live boot USB, and tried to install it. The keyboard works in the preinstalled Kubuntu 22.10 and in BIOS, but ceases to work once I start the installation process. I then tried to install Kubuntu 23.10, with exactly the same effect. Finally, I took the live USB I used to install Linux Mint 21.2 to my old laptop, and yes, the k ..read more

I just installed a fresh Kubuntu on my Ideapad 3, touchpad was working fine but then after a while, I noticed it became very slow and hard to move in random instances and then it went back to normal, after installation of the OS I have only done 2 things that may contribute to this problem: I changed trackpad settings, made it faster. I installed a driver package sudo apt-get -y install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics How can I troubleshoot this ..read more

Ctrl-= in terminal mode

In Emacs, I have bound Ctrl-= to a custom function. What is strange is that when I run Emacs in a terminal, hitting Ctrl-= just enters an equal sign and does not execute this custom function. In a GUI window, everything works as intended. I have tried different terminal programs, but this does not seem to make a difference. What could be the reason that Ctrl-= is not received by Emacs as such? On my keyboard, Ctrl-= actually is Ctrl-Shift-0, just if that matters. My system is Kubuntu 22.04 ..read more

I have a Microsoft Designer Compact Keyboard. I recently installed Kubuntu and wanted to use the "expression key" key as a right ctrl. In windows it was a simple solution, changing the key to "application key" on the "Microsoft keyboard and mouse app" and then mapping that key to the right ctrl on Power Toys. Is it possible to do this on Linux ..read more

Can’t set up 4K resolution on new PC after cloning Linux Kubuntu SSD from laptop with Clonezilla

TLDR AT THE END I recently cloned my SSD with Clonezilla from a laptop with Linux Kubuntu to a new desktop PC. Both SSDs were 500gb, the laptop has a 12th gen i5 processor, and the PC has a 13th gen i7 processor, and there are no separate GPUs . The laptop’s default display is its 1080p built-in display. I've connected the new PC to a new 4K monitor, but it can only display 1080p on the monitor. I suspect it’s an issue with cloning from the laptop because I can connect the monitor to my laptop and have it display 4K without any issues (with the exact same hard drive information as the PC which ..read more

Can I install latest Kubuntu (23.10) on top of dual boot with Windows with old Kubuntu version (13.10)?

I have a dual boot PC with old versions of Kubuntu and Windows installed. I can't upgrade Windows but I can/want to upgrade Kubuntu. The Kubuntu installed version: Kubuntu version: 13.10 Qt Version: 4.8.4 KDE Libs 4.11.3 Kernel version 3.11.0-12-generic OS Type: 64 bit Is it possible to just install the latest Kubuntu on top (i.e. insert the DVD iso and start the installation) without breaking the dual boot? Or should I try to upgrade incrementally via updates? In case it matters, I don't care about losing any data from the installed Kubuntu. What I am interested in is that the dual boot wi ..read more

I have a PC with the following specs: Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1055T Processor, 2800 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 6 Logical Processors RAM: 6GB Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology GA-890-FXA-UD5 Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Hard Disk: 500GB This PC has Windows 7 installed. As I can't upgrade Windows, I want to ask if with this specs I can install a (recent) Linux version e.g. Ubuntu/Kubuntu? Or which would work for a desktop with these hardware specs? In case it helps, I would not be using it for heavy tasks such as gaming, video or image processing, streaming etc ..read more

KUbuntu / Windows 10 dual-boot issues

I have installed KUbuntu on my computer, along with GRUB. I however am facing a persisting issue: whenever I boot into KUbuntu, when I shut down and boot my computer back up, I get immediately booted on KUbuntu, and I have to reboot my computer several times before it boots to GRUB. It is really frustating as I sometimes have to wait over 15 minutes to be able to log into Windows (like this morning). KUbuntu also frequently fails to boot, it shows two lines of log, or some more before and gets stuck, or when it does boot up, my mouse just wont work and I have to unplug it and plug it back in ..read more

Quizzical bluetooth boot error on Linux 6.5 kernel
Unix Stack Exchange Forum » Kubuntu

I recently upgraded the kernel on my KUbuntu 22.04 desktop machine to the most recent supported version of 6.5. It now will not boot successfully to the default kernel, with the error message: [5.something-something] Bluetooth: hci0: Opcode 0xfc1e failed: -16 However, if I start it on kernel 6.2, absolutely everything works fine including Bluetooth pairing with my phone.. (I'm using the same machine now.) I know that hci0 is my first (and only) Bluetooth device; unfortunately I have no idea what "Opcode 0xfc1e" is or what "-16" is supposed to mean to me. How can I fix this so I can boot to t ..read more
