“Life is a combination of magic and pasta,” said Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini. And indeed, over these past weeks in Italy, my life was a blend of magic and pasta. My excellent guides gave me moments of insight into the past, and I encountered inklings of what I dream to see in the future. In Italy, the threads of the past and the pull of the future seemed to conspire to magnify the present and expand me. Yes, the scenes, settings, and stories often astonished me, but the many people I met and came to know and befriended affected me the most. First, a story – when I was 17, I bought a be ..read more

After weeks in Italy, where coffee was everywhere morning, noon, and night, I’m back to drinking tea after a detox week in the Dolomites. I love the aroma of coffee, as it reminds me of my mom. But tea is my go-to for a hot, cozy beverage. The weather was chilly and damp in Venice, with only occasional sun, but as Shelley wrote, “Venice, its temples and palaces did seem like fabrics of enchantment piled to heaven.” Enchantment, indeed! And every morning, I enjoyed cups of berry-infused tea. In honor of the upcoming new season of Bridgerton, I present a curated catalog of tea service opportun ..read more

Travel for These Six Art Exhibits

I remember the first landmark art exhibit I viewed. The year was 1976, and the museum was the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MET. Even at age ten, I was acutely aware of the specialness of what I was seeing and the fact that I could see it just a bus ride away from my home. I felt so lucky that I lived just a bus ride away from the MET. The exhibit was Treasures of Tutankhamun. I’ve since read about the craziness that occurred behind the scenes to make that show possible, and apparently, it’s astonishing that it happened at all. I still feel that specialness whenever I get the opportunity to ..read more

Discovering DC: Unforgettable Experiences

I’ve lived in DC for over 35 years, and I love this city like no other. Designed by a Frenchman, Pierre L’Enfant, the layout of the city reminds me of the elegance of Paris with its broad boulevards, the spacious Mall, and intellectual debates. The international population ensures you’ll hear other languages just walking down the streets. Perpetual learners, both young and old, satisfy their curiosity and thirst for knowledge at the many universities that spread across this city. The art scene is thriving, too. The Kennedy Center opened The Reach to expand its community offerings, and the th ..read more
