David Lynch, MD
Last October, Clin-STAR selected David Lynch, MD as a Clin-STAR Transdisciplinary Aging Research Pilot Grant.recipient. Recently, Clin-STAR posted a summary of the project along with a brief interview with Dr. Lynch. According to the summary, the long-term goal is, “to improve older adults’ physical function and quality of life through targeted interventions that alter causal biological pathways.”

Are a new group of obesity medications suitable for older people? While weight loss can improve cardiovascular health and physical function in older people with obesity, a new article says that these drugs may have fewer benefits and more risks for this population group. Dr. John Batsis, who focuses on older adults with obesity and frailty, called these drugs “promising.” But he also believes that we need more data on how they affect older adults.

According to the CDC, roughly 1 in 4 Americans 65 and older experience falls annually. The CDC also says that falls are the leading cause of injury and death in this age group.
Dr. Christine Kistler (Associate Professor in Geriatric and Family Medicine) recently spoke to the Washington Post about the seriousness of falls for older adults. She said, “For the elderly, a fall is a life-changing and potentially life-ending event.” Kistler said that a fall that’s a noninjury in your forties can be far more serious in your eighties.

Dr. Debra Bynum discovered her interest in Geriatric Medicine as a resident. Margaret Drickamer, MD
The Washington Post recently quoted Dr. Margaret Drickamer in an article on hospice care. As the Associate Medical Director of Inpatient Hospice, Dr. Drickamer, deals with tough choices on a regular basis. She says, “it can be upsetting for family members and patients who have prepared for death, only to be told the patient has hit a plateau and is being discharged from hospice care.”

Marvin McBride, MD, MBA
Marvin McBride was always interested in science and people. In medicine, he merged these two interests. After graduating from Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, he attended Duke Medical School.
During his medical training, Dr. McBride gravitated towards family medicine. As a result, he completed a family medicine residency at the University of Virginia. Part of his attraction to family medicine was the challenge of dealing with all sorts of people and a range of medical issues.

Dr. Laura Hanson, Medical Director, UNC Palliative Care Program & Professor of Geriatric Medicine
The International Neuropalliative Care Society (INPCS) recently honored Laura Hanson MD, MPH with its Outstanding Scientific Contribution Award. The November 2022 award honored Dr. Hanson’s research in dementia palliative care. At the INPCS’ invitation, she gave a presentation at the virtual meeting.
