My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered Review — B-

Like the title says. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this show. It’s the type that takes the stupidity up to 200% and never stops, never looks back. It kept getting more and more ridiculous. The structure is a little repetitive but entertaining enough since it’s so different (for good reason) from everything else— build up a few ridiculous villains, then have the main character trivially kill them, sometimes by accident. The straight men are good if you enjoy that sort of humor. I also appreciated how I never knew which direction it was going to head next. Storytelling – B – Worked ..read more

Classroom of the Elite Review — B

The elite love to abuse their children and teach them to be dicks. This show is so pretentious and I love it. Possibly the dumbest school setup in anime, which actively tries to destroy its students in the guise of educating them. People go to the hospital for the sake of their grades in this anime. It is so dumb and I am here for it. Pretty much all the characters, with the lead in particular, are absolute trash human beings incapable of forming a human friendship. I love it. My interest level did vary over the course of the show, with the first season being decent, the second pretty weak ..read more

Synduality Noir Review — B-

Mecha!!!! Objectively, maybe it wasn’t great. But it sure ticked all the nostalgia boxes for me. Robots! Singing! Betrayals! Lots of random goofiness! A convoluted love triangle! Some very confusing plot about saving the world from some weirdo’s stupid plan! This is everything I expected from a mecha show 15 years ago. It was great back then and honestly it’s still pretty great now. My main criticism would be that the characters weren’t very compelling, especially compared to something like Macross Frontier. Which in turn made the rest of the show much less gripping. I have to give it credit ..read more

Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable Review — C

Our main character moves to Hokkaido and finds out. I’m not sure why this show got so much hype in the circles I run in. I’ve certainly seen worse, but it was ultimately pretty forgettable. I did appreciate how the setting was slightly different (in Hokkaido) with a different type of female lead, but aside from that it was a thin veneer over the harem anime of the past. A few other things also make it better than these used to be: the main character has a clear preference for one of the girls, and the main character is close to the typical bland protagonist but has a few remaining vestiges of ..read more

Meiji Gekken: 1874 Review — D-

It’s the Meiji era. This had a decent first episode, which ended with the main character becoming a cop. I should have dropped it then and there. Could have just read Harry Potter if I wanted that shit, which at least had the decency to make Harry a cop in the last chapter and not force us to watch it. Meiji Gekken went nowhere fast and I don’t know what the point was. I could barely even be bothered to follow the story in a cursory manner. It had a historical fiction setup which I love that it squandered on who knows what. It was incapable of keeping my attention. That’s partly on me but mo ..read more

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki-kun Review — C+

Tomozaki is leveling up. I felt similar to the first season. An interesting premise but I think it could have taken it in much more interesting directions. It felt superficial, with these characters in high school having conversations about things that they simply don’t have the experience to understand or have an opinion worth listening to on, yet we are supposed to take them very seriously. I spent most of the show wanting to slap everyone and tell them they’re still kids and they should fuck around a bit and make mistakes and not take life so dreadfully seriously. I did appreciate that th ..read more

Banished From the Hero’s Party, I Decided To Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside S2 — B

A new hero appears. I started out wondering why on earth this was getting a sequel. The last one had come to a very satisfactory conclusion, with the main character’s sister overcoming her hero’s blessing / fate to live how she wanted. But actually, the second season ended up being worthwhile. It took things in a similar but slightly different direction, looking at a new hero who was much too eager to fulfill his fated role which led to disastrous consequences and needed to be guided on the right path. Didn’t quite live up to the first season but still good. They are way too lenient on excus ..read more

Cute deaf girl hooks up with hot mysterious stranger. For what it is, it was pretty good. The love triangle is half-baked and since they hooked up halfway through the second half mostly lost my interest. For shows like this, I feel like it would be much more interesting if the lead characters were more flawed. Or there were more conflict in their relationship. Like… the girl wishes the boy were home more often but he neglects her traveling. The hot boy wants to make out but the girl isn’t ready. I don’t know. Give me something to keep me watching! I don’t want to watch a disgustingly happy co ..read more

The Fire Hunter Review — C-

A very ambitious story that completely fell apart. I have to give this credit for having ambition. It’s probably the most interesting sci-fi premise we’ve seen since Shin Sekai Yori. It feels like it has an interesting story to tell and a well thought out setting. So I tried to give this the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, the anime was a mess from start to finish. The animation style is again ambitious, but they bit off more than they could chew and many parts are barely animated still frames. The story is so rushed that I could barely figure out what was going on half the time. None of ..read more
