FWP is seeking comment on seven proposed Habitat Conservation Leases (HCLs) in southeast Montana. HCLs are incentive-based, voluntary agreements offered by FWP to help conserve priority wildlife habitats on private lands while also supporting working agricultural lands and public hunting and recreation opportunity. Private landowners can enroll their land into a 30- or 40-year conservation lease in return for a one-time, per-acre lease payment. CPW Releases Updated Collared Gray Wolf Activity Map; Launches Depredation Report Webpage

An updated map was published today on Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) website to continue informing the public, recreationists, and livestock producers on where collared wolves have been in the past month. CPW will update this map with new information monthly to reflect data for the past 30 days or so, produced on the fourth Wednesday of every month. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host free public tours of the Winnemucca Off-Range Wild Horse and Burro Corral located in Paradise Valley, Nevada, on Thursday May 16 and Friday, May 17, 2024. Attendees will have the opportunity to view wild horses gathered from overpopulated herds in Nevada, California, and the recently gathered animals from the East Pershing Complex. Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks is seeking public input on a potential project that would place nearly 33,000 acres of private timberland in northwest Montana under a conservation easement and protect working lands, public recreation access, and wildlife habitat. Recently, the R-CALF USA Board of Directors seated three new board members elected from Regions V (Texas), VI (Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma), and IX (Alabama, Florida, and Georgia). Region directors are elected by majority vote from cattle-owning members in their region’s respective states. The directors serve three-year terms, and no director may serve more than two consecutive terms. The board also reelected Region III Director Brett Kenzy as President of the Board and Region VII Director Eric Nelson as Vice President of the Board. Once again Montana’s Livestock Loss Board is accepting loss prevention grant applications. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on May 31st. Board members will be meeting sometime during the last week of June to award the grants. For the first time in many years the board has adequate funding for larger projects. There are many negative attributes of social media, but there are also posts that are truly enlightening. One such post recently led me to check out Warren Johnson’s Facebook page, which led to discovering his blog. I do not personally know Warren, but he is a larger-than-life character whom everyone connected with horses, rodeos, and outfitting knows about.
