The crisis in Haiti has been in our prayers. We pray that a solution may be found that brings lasting peace and stability to the Caribbean nation. In recent months, our podcast “Deacons Pod” has featured interviews with the founders of two organizations that serve children in Haiti: An episode from last September with Gerard Straub of Santa Chiara Children’s Center and Academy:   And an episode from last November with Cherylann and Len Gengel of the Be Like Brit Foundation, which operates a home and academy for children:   The Gengels also received a Hecker Award for Social Justice ..read more

Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached this homily on the 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B) on January 28, 2024, at the Paulist Center in Boston, MA. The homily is based on the day’s readings: Deuteronomy 18:15-20; Psalm 95; 1 Corinthians 7:32-35; and Mark 1:21-28. Even though we’re only on verse 21 of the Gospel of Mark, already Jesus has been baptized, has spent time in desert, and called the first apostles. Today, Jesus gets down to business, with his first act demonstrating that the reign of God is at hand.  But right now, we need to say something about our startling second rea ..read more

Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached this homily on Christmas Eve on December 24, 2023 at the Paulist Center in Boston, MA. The homily is based on the day’s readings: Isaiah 9:1-6; Psalm 96; Titus 2:11-14; and Luke 2:1-14. Welcome, welcome! Welcome to our regular members, welcome to those who are back in town for the holidays, welcome to those traveling, and an especially warm welcome to those who have joined us at the request of family members. You all help make this celebration all that it is meant to be, as evidenced by those who gathered in the stable during the first Christmas – humble Jewish ..read more

Nothing Will Be Impossible For God… or For Us

Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached this homily for the 4th Sunday of Advent (Year B) on December 24, 2023 at The Paulist Center in Boston, MA. The homily is based on the day’s readings: 2 Samuel 7:1-16; Psalm 89; Romans 16:25-27; and Luke 1:26-38. Time passes quickly! Here we are, on this 4th Sunday of Advent as ridiculously late in December as it can be. (Pay no attention to the decorations behind me.) If you’re here at Mass, you’re probably ready for Christmas, or you’re so far behind that you’ll never make it, anyway! Today’s gospel passage is the Annunciation. It’s one of the most famil ..read more

Comfort, But Not Control: The Wisdom of Advent

Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached this homily for the Second Sunday of Advent (Year B) on December 10, 2023 at The Paulist Center in Boston, MA. The homily is based on the day’s readings: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11; Psalm 85; 2 Peter 3:8-14; and Mark 1:1-8. Our first reading today is perhaps the most hopeful passage in the entire Old Testament. In Babylon, at the lowest point in Israel’s history, God proclaims through Isaiah: “Comfort, give comfort to my people…. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low… The glory of the Lord shall be revealed… Cry out at the top of y ..read more

God’s Promise For the Future: The Immaculate Conception

Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached this homily for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8, 2023 at The Paulist Center in Boston, MA. The homily is based on the day’s readings: PGenesis 3:9-15, 20; Psalm 98; Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12; and Luke 1:26-38. This is the patronal feast day of the United States! Despite our gospel telling us about about Jesus’ conception, today we celebrate that Mary herself was conceived without sin. This raises two questions. First, why isn’t Mary’s Immaculate Conception recorded in the Bible? The answer is: why would it b ..read more

Let Me Brag About How Humble I Am
Paulist Fathers Blog
by Andrew Metzger

Paulist Fr. Rich Andre preached this homily for the 31st Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year A) on November 5, 2023 at The Paulist Center in Boston, MA. The homily is based on the day’s readings: Malachi 1:14b – 2:2b, 8-10; Psalm 131; 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13; and Matthew 23:1-12. Our first reading and our gospel passage today condemn those who seek leadership roles in order to empower themselves. Malachi and Jesus condemn those in authority who are not humble, authentic servant-leaders. Our reactions to these readings will probably come in three movements: In the first movement, we’ll ..read more
