The best time of year is upon us! March is great month to pick and choose those warmer days to get out on the water. With the milder winter we've been having I am already seeing lots of open water on the Eagle, Arkansas and both the upper and lower Colorado. Take advantage of world class fishing with very limited crowds & pressure this spring. My most recent trip down to the lower Eagle was productive in almost every way imaginable. Happy fish were found and angling pressure was at a minimum. Fish were eating nymph rigs, streamers and even a few lon ..read more

Saltwater Fishin Ain't Easy

Winter is here and this is the time fly shops talk more about destination trips. Unlike a lot of the industry folks that write these blogs, I am not a great saltwater angler. However, I've been lucky enough to do some traveling the last few years and here are some of the things I've learned, mostly the hard way.  - -Guanaja, Honduras - To start, let's clarify one big thing. Saltwater Fishin Ain't Easy. The weather rarely cooperates, it is almost always windy, and the fish are a lot less predictable than trout. The lower your expectations and the less pressure you put on specific fis ..read more

Shopping for the fly angler can be a difficult task, especially when they seem to have it all and you are not well versed in fly fishing gear. Here are a couple of my favorite products we carry that make for great gifts for any angler. -- Skwala Clothing Comfy clothing makes a big difference when out in the elements. We recently started carrying a new brand called Skwala which I have been super impressed with. My two favorite products are the Sol Wading Pant and the Thermo 150 Hoody.   Sol Wading Pant- These are quick dry pants that can be worn out on the water or ..read more

Harlan's Fishing Outlook for December

Published by: Harlan Kimball  Bring on winter! ...Orrr flee to warmer weather, cold drinks and hungry saltwater fish. December brings two types of fly fisherman; the one that sticks it out and enjoys the solitude of cold rivers and ice shacks or the one that books as many saltwater trips as possible without going completely broke. For some, the ability to do both is what keeps us sane through the ice cold months. Luckily, we still have a lot to look forward to for the month of December. Hunting picky tailwater fish, last-minute stillwater fishing, and the start of ice fishing seaso ..read more

Harlan's Fishing Outlook for November

Winter showed its true colors at the end of October with the first big snow storm and even some ice forming on small lakes and creeks. This cooler weather does not indicate the end of good fishing. If anything, fishing can be very rewarding late fall or early winter. Rivers are a lot less crowded, and the fish are feeling less pressure, leading to more eats. A lot of those eats have been on smaller-sized flies, but don't discount the large stonefly attractors, egg patterns, and streamers. Fish like to pack on pounds before the rivers and lakes get caped with ice. Covering lots of water with a ..read more

Fishing Outlook for September
Cutthroat Anglers Blog

With the arrival of September comes some of the best fishing of the year. The crowds of summer have started to dwindle down, and we've noticed fewer anglers out on the water, especially on weekdays. Mornings have been greeting us with cooler fall temperatures, pushing back the peak fishing time to around 11:00 a.m. I'm finally getting the morning frost on my windshield, meaning I can probably sleep in another hour to let things warm up. Even with things cooling down, lower elevation rivers are still seeing a lot of hopper eaters, more so in the middle to later parts of the day. The "big bug ..read more

Harlan's Fishing Outlook for May

As runoff ramps up here in the mountains, we have a lot to look forward to during the month of May. With the ice beginning to retreat from our reservoirs, it's one of our favorite times of year to get out and do some stillwater fishing. Whether you heading to South Park to fish Spinney or Antero, or head north to fish Green Mountain or Wolford; there are plenty of hungry fish cruising the banks looking for an easy meal. We do expect Wolford Reservoir to become muddy during runoff, but once that clears it will fish very well the rest of the summer. Bobber rigs with leeches, chironomids, a ..read more

Jack's "Lucent Waltz" Fly Tying Highlight
Cutthroat Anglers Blog

The Hot Head Sexy Walt’s is easily one of my favorite guide flies for spring. It is hard to argue with the simple bugginess of the Sexy Walts.  This version using Hareline Lucent Beads is an extremely effective variant for targeting spring rainbows and standing out in stained water. Another beautiful thing about the Walt’s is its subjectiveness. What bug is it representing anyway? Guess it’s up to the fish to decide…However, I think it replicates most caddis, sow bugs, scuds, and certain mayflies extremely well. Over the years of fishing this pattern, I had noticed its downfal ..read more
