On nice days, Doris Yaskiw likes to stroll along the pathways that follow the shores of the Glenmore Reservoir. She’s recently retired and lives in Haysboro, a 10-minute walk from Glenmore Landing, a shopping plaza just off 14th Street at 90th Avenue S.W.
In 2015, RioCan Management, owner of Glenmore Landing, started working with the City of Calgary to revitalize this 1980s retail complex. The developer’s latest proposal includes six new apartment towers that are taller and denser than anything in the neighbouring communities. Yaskiw opposes the plan.

When a house is listed for sale, the next step is usually to schedule an open house or a viewing. Showing off a home and all it has to offer is key to entice potential buyers and promote specific features such as a gourmet kitchen,
expansive primary bedroom or large backyard.
In 2020, the founders of Studio North, a Calgary-based home design and construction business, had a new vision for marketing homes, particularly those with striking architecture and design features. On the northern edge of the city, in one of Calgary’s newest communities, a cacophony of construction sound fills the air. There will eventually be 6,000 homes in Glacier Ridge, but right now it’s a bustling construction site, with show homes and some early residents sprinkled in. Excavators and loaders work with an expansive backdrop of rolling prairie, preparing land for more new builds.
This steady supply of new housing, primarily on the city’s outskirts, provides choices for Calgarians and keeps housing affordable compared to other major markets, says a City of C ..read more

Since the City of Calgary’s Downtown Development Incentive launched in 2021, more than $100 million has been granted to projects that will remove more than 1.35 million square feet of vacant office space from the market and convert it into residential housing. Currently, there are 10 projects throughout the inner city at different stages of development. These include the Natural Resources Building, the Petro Chemical Building, the Petro Fina Building and the historic Barron Building — all slated for conversion with support of the City’s incentive.

On Nov. 15, 2021, Calgary City Council declared a climate emergency and announced its commitment to “accelerated action to respond to climate change” and to “accelerate the pace and scale of climate action needed to achieve our goal of net zero emissions by 2050.” (Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions so they are as close to zero as possible.) After all, the impacts of climate change are already being felt: August 2022 was the second-hottest on record; June 2021’s historic heatwave was followed by worrying air quality related to wildfire activity; and, of course, we all remember the ..read more

Architecturally speaking, our city is best described as “serially experimental.” From California pink stucco to stone-veneer faux-Tudor, each dominant design trend that has ever hit Calgary sits in stark contrast to the favoured look of the previous decade and the one that follows. While every aesthetic has its merits, few trends have achieved enduring appeal. A new surge of homebuilding in Calgary, however, is banking on a classic style that has endured for centuries in the major urban centres of the Eastern U.S.
