Exposing Studs for Mounting Floating Shelves That Carry Heavy Loads

I want to build some floating shelves that will hold liquor bottles above a bar. I've made box-style floating shelves that slide over shop-built mounting brackets before. For those builds, I mounted the bracket over the drywall and then drilled into the studs. The shelves held up fine, but they also didn't hold nearly as much weight as the bar shelves will need to.  I was looking around YouTube and came across the video below. If you look around the 12 minute mark, he says that for heavy-duty applications, you should actually remove the drywall before mounting the bracket because over tim ..read more

Pantry Organizers

I'm sticking this under General Woodworking since it is pretty general in nature.  I am taking up the time between big steps of my current project to make LOML happy.  Part of a recent remodel is an increased size for the pantry.  She wanted some corrals or organizers for the many random things that go into the staples of our food-making life.  Te fixtures are scaled so that if there is ever a need, they can be lined up five fixtures wide.  More realistically they will be placed randomly around the shelving units.   I have some scrounged 1/4" MDF that I have been ..read more

Liquid hide glue problem

I am using Titebond liquid hide glue to build 3 bowfront drawers 3/4" thick made of 6 Layers of 1/8" bendable plywood.  In the past I have been able to squeeze out lins of gluel on the surface ( back and forth) then use a rubber roller to easily rollout the glue.  This week I started the first drawer front and ran out of glue from my 1 year old bottle.  Grabbed the new bottle that was kept in the same place as the old (60 deg shop).  As soon as I started rolling the glue it started to grab the roller and glue would stretch like mozarella when I lifted the roller off of the ..read more

I have a Delta GR450 8" bench grinder with tool less retainer nuts and I want to switch to a regular nut but have been unable to find anything locally or even online that will work. Using the model number etc I purchased these from ereplacemnets and after 6 weeks and $18 they don't fit. The reason I need to change is the tool less version does not work with my wheel balancers. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance for your help ..read more

Hi, I want to make fingerholes in a sliding cabinet door.  I don't want the hole to go all the way through the door.  But my forstner bits have a pilot bit, and so they leave a divot in the bottom, which I don't want.  Any way to make the fingerhole without a divot?  ..read more

Are these chair parts commercially available?...

I have an idea for something new that I want to make and if I can find someone who sells these particular parts it would make going into production so much easier.  I'll picture them below but the two parts I'm interested in is the leg of an older style chair as well as the top back brace.   The leg has a good bend to it and the top brace is 'bent' as well and tapers from the bottom to the top.  Any idea where I should start looking to find these parts?  Thanks. PS.  Sorry, I kept getting 'file size too large' when I was uploading so I had to cut out most of my picture ..read more

I have about 8 dozen dead American elm trees that died from extreme heat in June of 2022.  Have gotten them taken down, looking for artists, furniture makers, etc who may be interested in some wood.  They are quite lovely, hard, dense wood, no rot.  Mother tree was 81 years old. Really hate the idea of cutting up for firewood.  Am on Vashon Island WA ..read more
