Since 2017, The Rugby Club Foundation has given financial support to Rugby programs, providing opportunities for male and female players, coaches, and officials of all ages, abilities, and levels of experience, in all formats of Rugby across the State of NSW. The 2024 Kari Foundation Ella 7s, held on March 2nd at Tuggerah Sports Precinct, once again proved to be a resounding success. This year, the Youth Tournament received direct support from The Rugby Club Foundation, featuring both boys' and girls' teams in the U16 and U14 age categories. This segment of the tournament is crucial as it paves the way for Indigenous youth to engage in rugby, while also providing them with the opportunity to emulate the first nations role model players who took part in the event.

‘Sharing the Spirit of the Game’
The Foundation’s Board of Directors (Board) continues to pursue the Foundation’s strategic vision of ‘Sharing the Spirit of the Game’, and its constitutional Primary Object, namely “to encourage the sport of Rugby in the State of New South Wales and elsewhere at a grassroots level of Rugby” (Primary Object).
Through its ongoing interaction with the wider Rugby community and with the administrators of the game, the Board continues to implement initiatives and achieve outcomes which will attain the Primary Object and thus benefit grassroots Rugby.

Originally established in 1991 as a Rugby based organisation to provide opportunities and education to enrich the lives of indigenous children, the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (the Lloydies) has significantly shaped the Rugby landscape and had a profound impact on the broader First Nations community.

Nearly forty young referees in Sydney are about to join NSWRU’s new youth match official development program, the Sydney Youth Referee Academy.
The Academy is a multi-year programme, open to boys and girls in Years 10 – 12. Academy manager Tom Chadwick said:
“The purpose of the Academy is to keep more young referees involved in the game for longer as well as to further develop their understanding of the game with more challenging education, presentations from Super Rugby and Shute Shield referees, and opportunities to attend tournaments such as the NSWJRU Junior State Championships.

On Friday 15th September 2023, a Nowra Anglican College Invitational Barbarian team assembled at Shoalhaven Rugby Club to play against the touring Tongan Schoolboys. Thousands of people from the local community and further afar came to watch this amazing spectacle.
The Barbarian team, coached by former Herron Scholarship recipient Keiran Wallace and assistant coach Daniel Toole, boasted eight players from Nowra Anglican College and 15 from the local South Coast/ Illawarra region. It is extremely satisfying for The Rugby Club Foundation to announce that, during the financial year ended 30 June 2023, its Grants Program provided more than $500,000 in support of 25 grassroots Rugby endeavours across Australia’s eastern seaboard and, for the first time, in South Australia.
Since it launched its Grants Program in 2017, the Foundation has now assisted 141 grassroots Rugby projects with grants totalling more than $2.2 million.

Rugby Life Member of The Rugby Club Foundation, NSW Rugby Life Member and OAM recipient Robin Timmins sadly passed away earlier this week.
Robin’s Rugby involvement commenced with her husband Geoff in the Eastwood District Rugby Referees Association after its formation in 1963. By the mid 1960s, Robin was the Honorary Secretary of the Association, a voluntary position she held until 1982.
In 1968, Robin was employed as a Secretary by the Sydney Rugby Union, and not long after showed interest in sitting the referees exams being held at the offices. Told she could not sit for the exam, Robin inv ..read more

Foundation Member Michael Fahey and his colleagues have compiled this wonderful book which illustrates all the jerseys worn since Australia began playing Test Matches in 1899, and along the way tells the story of some of the famous players that wore those particular jerseys. Most are well known, and some are legends of our game. A sprinkling were players who only played tour games and did not have a test career for various reasons – but were Wallabies all the same.
