The United States will hold a dizzying array of state and federal elections this year, so European observers will necessarily focus their attention on the presidential contest and a handful of others. On paper, the North Carolina governor race wouldn’t likely count among them, but this year it should.
North Carolina politics is fascinating in its own right. The Tar Heel State is a microcosm of interstate demographic shifts, class conflict, and the role of these forces in American politics.
The state’s tremendous population growth, heavily driven by migrants from northern states, has continued ..read more

Democracy, despite common parlance, is not a modern construction. There has always been democracy in Europe; in fact, despotic regimes were very rare. The idea that ‘democracy’ is a modern phenotype has grown with the general rationalist, scientist outlook connected to ‘progress’. There was Ancient Greek direct participation in the ‘polis’. Iceland’s ‘Allthing’ was a federal assembly around 1000AD. The Holy Roman Empire had ‘Grand Electors’. Hereditary monarchs began to replace elective monarchs in most of Europe around the twelfth century. The French Revolution ushered in the decline of democ ..read more

Major American companies, such as Anheuser-Busch, Planet Fitness, and even Disney, have recently had to deal with backlash coming from the right for their woke policies. Anheuser-Busch did so for having hired transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney as a spokesperson for their Bud Light brand; Planet Fitness for their policy of letting biological males into women’s locker rooms in their facilities if aid males self-identified as women; and Disney, among other things, for casting a Latina actress in the role of Snow White.

With a resounding bipartisan majority of 79 to 18, the US Senate has passed a $95 billion aid bill aimed at supporting Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine. This development resolves a months-long stalemate in the Congress, and upon receiving the signature of US President Joe Biden, new arms shipments can start.

What was more of a bad joke a couple of months ago may become a reality after all: geriatric President Joe Biden may be re-elected in November.

Despite that, the Democrats avoided the total beat-down in the 2022 midterms. Republicans only gained a narrow majority in the House, and the Democrats even gained a seat in the ..read more

At the National Conservatism Conference in Brussels last week, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview on stage that he protected Hungary from gender ideology. It’s true, but I sometimes wonder if Hungarians really understand what that means.
Last week in the United States, President Joe Biden released new rules governing Title IX, a part of American civil rights law governing its application to discrimination against women. The new rules are 1,600 pages, making it longer than Tolstoy’s War And Peace. With no participation of Congress, Biden’s administration declared that the Title IX ..read more
