What internet connection technology is this? (Kutaisi, Georgia (republic of))

Hello, Please help me identify: what internet connection technology is this? This is the setup installed at my apartment in Kutaisi, Georgia (republic of) by technicians of Silknet, one of the three internet service providers in the country. The yellow cable looks like an optical one, but it is only about a meter long and terminates in a white box branded with the name of ISP, 'Silknet'. What goes out of the box and into the hole in the wall looks like a thin electrical two-core cable. What technology is this? Power (and other utility) outages are frequent in the whole Georgia. It would be ..read more

Routed vs. LAN solutions

In my work in the ISP industry, I've noticed that public IPv4 addresses are distributed in two ways: via a LAN solution, where the customer is simply assigned a block of IPs to use with their gateway device (the first usable IP of course going to the provider as the "gateway IP"); or via a "routed solution" where the customer's larger public IP block is routed out to the provider core and then to the internet through a smaller subnet (usually a /30) with a "glue IP". In many cases the ISP will provide a "managed router" at the site for this where they would otherwise normally provide a demarc ..read more

Has anyone had real good luck with zoom phone or teams calling and VoIP? What abut a true Ethernet or Wi-Fi phone? Also I see they have a new business high speed one but there still limited to AC  1 GB networks. I am surprised they don't do wireless AX Would there be a problem/quality loss if you used a different router instead? https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2461891-using-starlink-with-a-medium-busines-voip ..read more

Dedicated Fiber vs Coax Broadband--real world difference

I see many threads about the theoretical difference between dedicated and shared internet service, and I get all of that, so no need to reiterate that information here. What I am looking for is real-world experience. If I have 10 users in my small business that are on a 1Gig broadband service, light internet usage (no major cloud or VPN services, etc) and we switch to a 100M dedicated, what specific real-world differences will my employees experience? The simple answer (based on theory but not real world experience) would be that in low traffic times, the difference will be experienced as a do ..read more

This is a new FTTP service being rolled out over the UK.  They only lay the fibre and then you can chose from a list of ISPs. It is presented as Ethernet on an ONT and the ISP supplies a hub. Some of the roadworks weren't popular in towns ..read more

Will swapping primary and backup internet providers affect external static IP?

A client (Resort) has 2 different Internet providers. One for the Business (Suddenlink) data one for VoIP (Nitel or is it Lumen or is it World-Net). The business internet is cable (coax) and the VoIP is fiber. The VoIP installers couldn't get the phone system (Mitel) stable on Suddenlink. Most calls dropped in 3 to 5 minutes. Tech Electronics blamed QOS of Suddenlink. I have my doubts since I have many customers on VoIP and Suddenlink (and other 'coax' internet providers) that have no issues. Nitel crashes (cut lines somewhere on the planet) for 13 hours to 3 days at least once a month. This m ..read more

I'm doing some volunteer work for a church in a poor community, upgrading their wifi and internet cabling so that they can better manage their food bank processes. Turns out that the Comcast cable internet service they are paying for sux, with outages of varying durations occurring all the time. Example: No internet access for over an hour yesterday at 11:30 AM. No access at all for more than 24 hours this last weekend. When I call, Comcast always says, "Who? Me?!!! Our service is working fine." But it's not, and I need some way of tracking and recording outages to get this company to do somet ..read more

Hi all, I've been doing system administration for a while now but I am slowly being involved more on the networking side of things. I have many questions about networking but I want to start with learning about the process of purchasing a new ISP connection as we will be opening a 3rd office soon and I'd like to better grasp all concepts of this. I'd rather appear stupid to strangers on the internet than to my colleagues! Looking at what we have in my current office, we have a fiber connection that comes up from the street which connects into some sort of device that I think connects straigh ..read more
