It may be the spooky month, but if you smell something scary in your cat or dog’s mouth, that stink need to be treated. According to Dr. Dani, pet dental health is linked to several other diseases, including heart, liver, and kidney conditions. Keeping your fur kid’s teeth and gums healthy is not just about a sparkling smile and fresh breath, it's about maintaining their overall health and quality of life.
Visiting the vet is different than visiting a human dentist, because cats and dogs have special teeth and mouth concerns:
Dogs have 42 teeth - cats have 30! (BTW, humans have 32 ..read more

A natural disaster is a stressful event for pets and people. Unfortunately, Kelowna has been plagued by floods and fires this year, and the wild weather is showing no signs of abating.
If you do need to evacuate, a little preplanning, such as knowing where you will go if evacuated, can help enormously.
Having supplies from home makes uprooting much easier on your pet, so pack a grab bag with pet care essentials. Download a Packing List for your Emergency Pet Plan here.
Kennels and emergency shelters may require vaccine history for your pets. We store o ..read more

Now that he's back settled into practice, we thought we would ask Dr. Jason to reflect on his five month sabbatical trip.
You took care of five fur families while you were traveling, in several different countries. What was your favourite pet to housesit?
Although Tom the Italian cat will always be dear to us, Sibi, the huge 12 month old male Irish Wolfhound we babysat in France was our fav. His sweet nature, huge presence and attentiveness reminded me of Tully, our beloved late wolfhound and Ragna, our current, (relatively little) wolfhound girl. We love the relaxed ..read more

After finishing up our house sit in Cambridge, we headed by train back to London and hopped a quick flight to Marrakech, Morocco. This was my second time in Morocco, Arnica’s third, but our kids were there for the first time. Marrakech is a lovely place to visit and Morocco is very tourist-friendly. The weather was lovely, not too hot and very sunny and dry for January. This was a stark contrast to the wet, cool, dark weather in England.
Our arrival describes the top hospitality we experienced for two weeks. An airport taxi took us to our riad, a traditional city house in the old part of town ..read more

Top nutrition for humans' best friends
Do you want your best friend to live a long and healthy life? Nutrition is the best preventative medicine.
Dogs actually aren't wolves, as some food brands would have you believe. Our domestic canines have been humans' best friends for at least 20,000 years. These opportunistic omnivores have evolved to live with us, begging with their cute eyes and eating our leftovers for millennium.
Because dogs traditionally ate their humans' geographically-based diets across the globe, and because they evolved for specific jobs, their nutrition needs vary slightly ..read more

It’s hard to believe that we are finishing up our sabbatical time soon. The drizzly and frosty month of December we spent in England. Our first month-long stay was looking after a small terrier mix named Tilly in a small country village in the rolling South Downs area of West Sussex. This magical area of England inspired the illustrator for Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows - in fact, he lived right down the lane from our stone village house.
We did not want to attempt driving the winding country lanes on the other side of the road, so our country stay involved long hikes, and a f ..read more

Warm greetings from chilly Northern Europe. We spent most of the month of November in a large stone farmhouse, high in the mountains in the Abruzzo region of Italy.
Our temporary home was almost directly east of Rome, across the Apennine mountains, above the Adriatic Sea. Abruzzo is dotted with many ancient villages on the tops of hills and the sides of mountains. The elevation was traditionally a strategic advantage for defending the ancient towns; today, it makes for strong leg muscles and adventuresome driving. Taking the little car to the markets was a biweekly adventure, with one lane wi ..read more

From Dr. Jason: We spent the first week on the Croatian coast exploring the white-walled villages and castle walls made famous as the location for the Game of Thrones series. After Arnica and Acacia got their fill of seafood, we moved inland to Hungary for our first house sit.
Currently our family of four is spending 3 weeks in a thatch-roofed village just up the hill from Lake Balaton. Lake Balaton is one of the largest lakes in Europe and it reminds me a lot of our own Lake Okanagan due to it’s size. It is a lot more shallow though, and the color can vary from light azul to deep grey depend ..read more

Local dog-friendly adventures
- let's go, Milo! The birds are starting to chirp, the sun is shining, the days are longer and the nights are warmer- it’s the best time of the year to spend outside with our dogs! Ask chihuahua Milo, pictured above. Milo spends every day at work with Nurse Christine, but he's raring to get out and explore on those days off.
Here are some of our insider tips from our on-staff pet parents - and their dogs, of course. And don't forget to pick up your toys from our shop before you go! (Aren't they the ..read more

Just as we promised, we've now filled our seven freezers (plus 2 more in the back!) with amazing selections of raw foods, and stocked our renovated shelves full of yummy foods for cats and dogs. Have you been in to see our new pet health food store? It's so awesome!!
We are super excited to now be carrying Big Country Raw, which is made in Canada, is balanced to the highest North American standards, and is really a great value food. Our own wolfhound Ragna is enjoying it every day (along with a turkey neck or two.) We even have an in-house Big Country Raw spokesperson, Nurse Tia, who can tell ..read more
