In June 2020 I lost my beloved Zoia, a 13 year old Siberian husky who had been my constant companion for over a decade. I was just heartbroken. I mourned her very much and it took me almost a year to realize that although she could never be replaced, I did want a four legged companion in my life. And it had to be a husky! Having had two before, nothing quite compared after that!
I knew I didn't want a puppy again, and throughout the last year I had been following Husky Rescue Ireland on Instagram and was amazed and heart warmed by the work they do. I knew I wanted to adopt a rescue husky from ..read more

So, you want to adopt a dog?
Are you committed to making it work?
Some of our updates might give the illusion that it's easy to just adopt your new pet. They will move in with you and ye will all live happily ever after but this is rarely the case.
All our dogs struggle to some degree when they are adopted. Remember their world is already upside down and now they have more changes to deal with. Most do settle in fairly quickly with a little patience and a few tweaks here and there.
However, some really struggle and that is where we need their new owner to be understanding, compassionate, patie ..read more

Huskies hail from Siberia, a region that experiences some of the world's most extreme weather. They have some of their own tools to stay cool (like their double coat) but certainly need extra help from us on the hottest days.
Our team has created this blog to help you care for your husky on the summer's hottest days. We also share some guidance on what to do if you think your dog is suffering from dehydration or, worse, from heatstroke.
Using Ice in Your Dog's Water Bowl
On warm days, some owners like to give their dogs ice cubes to keep them cool.
Although adding ice to your husky’s water bow ..read more

Every year people gift cute little puppies to friends and family without proper thought. And every year rescues pick up the pieces. After Christmas we receive so many messages from people surrendering their dogs because:
'They got too big',
'A family member bought me a puppy but i didn't want one',
'The kids have lost interest'
We are urging people to please stop and think. Are you getting a dog because you have done research into this breed and because you have decided you are ready to commit to 10-16 years of looking after a dog or are you getting a dog because it's cute and fluffy and becau ..read more

Thinking of adopting a Rescue Dog?
If you are considering adopting a Rescue Dog, please understand the stages that the dog goes through until he/she finally settles into their new home.
In the first 3 Days
They will feel overwhelmed - they might be scared and unsure of what's going on. They're not comfortable enough to be themselves. They may not want to eat or drink. They might just want to curl up under a table or chair. They are testing their boundaries.
After 3 weeks
They start to settle in. They feel more comfortable. They think it could be possible that this is their forever home. They h ..read more

This post is purely for information purposes. Nobody is looking for a clap on the back or to be told they are great.
This post is to increase people's awareness of how we operate.
From talking and interacting with people over the last few months, it seems people think that Husky Rescue Ireland is ran from a central office by a number of staff members who are there on a daily basis.
This is not even remotely close to what goes on behind the scenes.
Husky Rescue Ireland a charity ran 95% of the time by Andy & Tara who have families and dogs of their own to love and look after.

Unfortunately dog theft is on the rise so please be very vigilant and protect your furry friend from being another statistic.
Here are some tips to consider:
Never leave your dog unattended, especially in a car, tied to a railing outside a shop or in a backyard if you are not home.
Although it is now law, some dogs still have no microchip or incorrect details registered to the microchip they have. Please ensure that your pet is microchipped and registered correctly.
Ensure your dog has an ID Tag: just your contact number. Refrain from putting their name on the tag, this makes it easier for a ..read more

We humans have an "emotional cup". When we get exhausted, we can express our needs and address them accordingly. The same does not apply for our pets, and a little extra help is needed from us.
What causes an empty emotional cup?
An empty emotional cup doesn’t happen overnight. It is often the result of long-term actions. These can include unclear training, poor nutrition and unpredictable actions from humans. It’s worth noting that one of the biggest causes of an empty emotional cup for your beloved pet is under-stimulation, in other words - boredom!
We leave our dogs at home alone when we go ..read more

As this year comes to an end, we here at Husky Rescue Ireland appreciate all the families who have assisted us in adopting our beautiful doggies and giving them a happy and healthy life. However we still have miles to go in order to get all our lovely animals the homes they deserve:
Long Term Residents:
Currently, we have 3 long-term residents, Cosmo, Kai, and Luna.
They are very special doggies who would require quite experienced owners to suit their needs. Finding their perfect humans is a challenging task as we want only what's best for them, even if that means staying longer in the Rescue ..read more
